@Resonated @Mango920452 according to the article previously posted, 1st Gen immigrant is a background diversity factor, just as Economic diversity which I assume means including low income students. Perhaps this could benefit us
Not a hook. And it would depend on which country whether it even adds to diversity. You are all so qualified! Relax. You’ve put your best foot forward. Now it is up to someone else’s requirements, needs, wants…out of your hands. From here on out, it is not personal. Remember that! Acceptances and rejections from these kinds of schools are not a reflection on you. How you handle it is.
Just enjoy this time, ok? It is stressful, but you’ll also be making memories right now. Enjoy!
@Extinguisher unfortunately, I don’t qualify for ANY aid from any school unless its merit based. And I was under the impression that the CSS profile was due on November 1st according to the checklist at http://admissions.duke.edu/application/checklist but from what I’ve heard, Duke will not be even looking at that until Thanksgiving.
@HRSMom Thank you for your kind words. Knowing these things surely does help in stressful times.
@Lift35 Yeah, I too wonder how that score thing works. Especially for test scores. Because we might not have a clue what defines a barrier between a 4 and a 5. But I guess it’s their job and so it’s best to leave it to them and not worry about. We’ll know if it was meant to be in a few days.
@Resonated I kind of have a problem with understanding percentiles. Do you mean that those who have applied to Pratt will have a more strict consideration of test scores? Because that is
@anxiousenior1 How come you didn’t qualify for any aid? If I qualify, then you definitely qualify. And yeah I’ve submitted the CSS but now they say it’ll be looked at after Thanksgiving. Well, I don’t mind, they know best how to do their thing.
I think I’ve spent the last two hours reading admission threads for MIT for the class of 2019. Reading all that is interesting, but I wonder if CC is actually productive. Lol.
@Extinguisher I’ve done many of those financial aid calculators on multiple school websites and every time I get 0 or maybe around like 1k, which really isn’t worth the hassle of sending in tax forms and all that. And yes, those applying to Pratt tend to have higher scores because the math portions of the SAT and ACT plus Math II scores are scrutinized more rigorously.
@anxiousenior1 Ah I see. You’re right then, not worth the hassle. And well it’s not the SAT Math or the Math II Subject test I’m worried about. It’s the CR. So if it’s only Math they look at a little too seriously, then hopefully there won’t be a problem. Haha.
@Extinguisher yeah, if you look the freshman profile, the 50th percentile for Pratt in CR and Writing are slighter higher, by around 20 points, but in Math the difference is 60 points. I think that’s because most students that do superbly well in Math tend to be students who do well overall and slightly up the average scores in CR and Writing for admittance into Pratt.
@anxiousenior1 Hmm well thanks for letting me know. But I guess maths has always been one of my major strengths so not much to worry about there. Has your interview taken place?
@Extinguisher Yes, it was meh. My interviewer was emotionless the whole time. “Yes…mhmm…I see…yes…mhmm” it was pretty disconcerting
@anxiousenior1 I see. Well, don’t fret about it because interviews are only a sort of an extra recommendation. There is no good or bad. Mine wasn’t too entertaining either. Although the interviewer kept giving me responses like “Interesting…that’s good” and stuff, she seemed to be in too much of a hurry. And she would ask the next question before I had finished my answer to a previous one. Heh.
My admissions officer just notified me that I am considered 1st generation! Pretty happy I have a hook now, it slightly boosts my confidence
@Extinguisher Yeah, I don’t think that interview would really help me haha. She came late, and then spent like a good 5 minutes trying to think up questions to fill up the time.
@Lift35 Super!
@Lift35 Great!
Still no interview for me. Anyone else not get one?
@Lift35 Does Duke consider 1st generation immigrant that greatly? Good to know!
@Resonated I’m considered 1st generation college student not immigrant! I was born here, my parents received only associate’s degrees out of the country. And 1st Generation student is one of the hooks alongside URM, Legacy, and Recruited Athlete as far as I know. I think low income is only a tip? But don’t quote me on that. I don’t clearly know how they view 1st generation immigrant
literally scary, now we should just wait (only thing we could do right now) since almost all of us have had our interviews and turned in our quarter grades and stuff…
My interviewer seems in a hurry too.
Can you submit your additional grade report through fax?
Yes. Did they send you an email recently. It had the # 919-668-1661
Your school needs to send it.
