Duke ED Class of 2020 Applicants Discussion Thread

also how do they contact you? Email/phone/Duke account thing? I applied last friday and haven’t heard anything yet

@a1h313 I got an email from an alum

Last year my D was contacted for an interview by email in the late afternoon of the last date for contacts and was accepted ED …so don’t worry yet.

I applied on 10/11 and was contacted 10/27 by email

Do you think you’ll be contacted for an interview if you already submitted an additional rec?

How much do first quarter grades of senior year matter?

@missmolly32 I want to know too lol I got an 89 in BC calc

Question: To those who’ve had interviews, how knowledgeable should I expect my interviewer to be about specific programs? Or should I ask more general questions?

@anxiousenior1 I think Duke cares a lot about your first quarter grades, just to show you aren’t slacking off and stuff. Plus, they’re the only school I know of that asks for them, so they must be important to Duke. But that being said, I think they recognize the difficulty of the class. I have an A in AB Calc, and that would probably be treated the same as your 89 in BC Calc. You’d probably be also recognized for having a more difficult class. So don’t worry too much about it, you’ll be fine!

I got a C+ in calc this quarter so lol there goes my chance of getting in. I’ve always sucked at math so thank god I don’t wanna be an engineer.

@missmolly32 your grades are only one aspect of the admissions process. I’m sure there’s something outstanding about you that will make them overlook a few bad grades. Good luck!

@Mango920452 I’m hoping my essays will. I wrote about how I changed schools after being bullied in middle school and on the first day of school I found out my locker was next to my former bully and I had to grow up and be mature and not let myself be brought down by her presence and let the past go, and then I talked about during neuroscience research, particularly in the Alzheimer’s department because my grandma has it, as why Duke was the university for me. If it doesn’t work out oh well! I’ll get in somewhere else I’m sure.

@missmolly32 I can see those being really powerful essays. Hopefully we both get in and won’t have to worry about writing any more essays!

@anxiousenior1 I would prepare for them not to know much about specific programs. I had some questions about the Focus program and my interviewer didn’t know anything about it, because it was established after he’d graduated. It’s okay to have specific questions incase they have answers, but have more general ones prepared as well

How does submitting an additional teacher recommendation work? As in, I don’t get contacted for an interview so I ask a teacher for another recommendation. Do they mail it to Duke and does it need to be specified that it’s in place of an alumni interview so they know it’s not a late recommendation?

@missmolly32 Duke just sent an email which has information regarding that subject.

Does the recommendation need to be from a teacher, or can it be from a coach or someone you know really well (if you don’t get the interview).

It can be from anyone, it doesn’t have to be from a teacher.

when do we usually hear back form Duke?? 12.12 the last year??

I believe my daughter heard on 12/8 last year
