Duke University Early Decision for Fall 2025 Admissions

He will get in to a great school, no doubt.

We have a few disappointed applicants in our school too, all very capable and outstanding. It ended up that only 1 ED applicant was accepted. All others are deferred. Duke is hard. Please move on.

Nothing - but Duke has far more applicants like that than they can accept. They aren’t a huge school, and athletes and other priorities take up many spots. For example, we live nearby and many kids of people who work there get in, so faculty/staff kids also take up a good number of spots. Many choose to go elsewhere, but my kid has 8 friends from our area who are attending (parents all work there).

Seeking advice! Got 1540 on SAT. Looking to apply to Duke next year. Should retake or is the score good enough? Any advice is truly appreciated.

That score is fine.

Look at this years average and make a decision. It’s not quantified as in years past, thus only considered. It’s a good score and your other sections will decide your fate

Score is fine, and admit rate is still very small. But a 1540 vs a 1560 won’t make the difference!

Seems like there is more to his submission then. Maybe his essays or extracurriculars weren’t strong or they found content that was concerning (i.e. ChatGPT).

Anyone ED kid non QB, athletes or faculty kid get in without glimpse video and interview?

when i was in middle school, i particiapted in the duke TIP (talent identification program) should i mention that in the why duke essay? i wanted to say something like this: as a middle schooler in the duke TIP program, i aspire to come back to do engagement projects and learn with a diversity of peers as Duke did for me at an early age.

I’d say no - Duke TIP was pretty widespread.

Did you attend at Duke or another school?

If at Duke, can you call out something you remembered?

Otherwise, it’s just a generic statement not adding much detail or knowledge of the school.

In my humble opinion - of course.

ohh i totally see how its super generic. yeah i don’t remember anything that vivdly bc i was so young and also i guess nothing stood out to me back then. i know some people who did duke tip too and didn;t get in, so i’ll exclude it. probably need to words to go into something else more anyway thank you so much!!

i recently got a withdrawal passing on my transcript for a virtual class i was taking (AP Physics) I was able to communicate to the teacher my circumstances and he was able to renroll me into the virtual class. i take other HL and SL IB classes too (HL Chem, HL Bio, HL English and SL Global Politics and SL math) will this withdrawal in a rigorous class be viewed poorly in my application.

should i just sumbit regular decisions where the withdrawal will change to an A? or should i try and explain the withdrawal and sumbit ED. i want the best chances at duke and they transcript literaly changed a day ago so i didn’t even know that it would be on there till now and now i feel very unconfident.

No one can know but if you are going to get an A, I would personally wait.

You don’t know how much, if any bump there is ED.

Why have to justify (in their mind, providing an excuse) if you don’t need to?

Yes, the rate is vastly higher but includes athletes and legacies - and we don’t know which are not that.

Ultimately, make the best call for yourself.

You might even ask your admissions rep for guidance.
