Daughter accepted today. 1380 SAT and 98 W GPA. No merit.
Son accepted a few years ago with 1500 SAT and 98 WGPA. No merit either.

That’s crazy…low on my list of choices, but $$$ would have made me take a second look

PC is not known to give a lot of money. The briefly mention it before the tour…

My daughter was accepted also, with high stats and no merit. It is not her first choice, but was awaiting the financials. She will be declining, so hopefully someone deferred will get her spot. Good luck to everyone!

for those wondering about merit…the link with this info was on my daughters portal…

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Merit-Based Scholarships

What is the criteria for receiving a merit-based scholarship?
To receive consideration for a merit award, students must have a combination of the most demanding curriculum at their high school, and have an A average on an unweighted scale. Please note that this is not a guarantee of a merit scholarship, but a suggestion of the minimum requirements to be a competitive candidate.

What is the difference between a weighted GPA scale vs. an unweighted GPA scale?
We recalculate every applicant’s GPA on an unweighted 4.0 scale, so that we can compare GPAs evenly across our entire applicant pool. Weight is removed from honors and AP classes, so for example, an A in a college prep class is a 4.0, and an A in an honors class is also a 4.0.

How do you evaluate strength of curriculum?
Although we take the weight out of each student’s GPA, academic rigor and depth is a significant factor in our scholarship review process. Students who receive merit have exhausted the curriculum offered at their schools.

Do you take into account a student’s extracurricular activities when awarding a merit-based scholarship?
While extra-curricular activities play a large role in our admission decisions, they are not considered in the scholarship review. The only factors that we consider for merit scholarships are a student’s high school curriculum, their GPA, and their standardized test scores (if submitted).

What percentage of accepted students receive a merit-based scholarship?
Less than 25% of admitted students receive a merit award. Since most of our financial assistance is in the form of need-based aid, our merit scholarships are extremely competitive.

When are merit-based scholarships announced?
Scholarship notifications are released with the student’s admission decision.

Will you match scholarships from other institutions?
Since each institution’s applicant pool and criteria for merit scholarships vary greatly, we do not match merit scholarships awarded from other institutions.

If students who initially received a merit-based scholarship do not choose to attend Providence College, will those scholarships be reallocated?
No. We make all offers of merit scholarships understanding that not every student will accept that award.

Do you have an appeal process for merit-based scholarships?
There is no appeal process for merit-based scholarships at Providence College. This is different from the need-based aid process, where appeals can take place by contacting the Office of Financial Aid.

What is the different between a merit-based scholarship vs. a need-based financial aid award?
Merit scholarships are awarded by the scholarship committee regardless of a student’s financial need. Awards are based solely on their academic performance in high school and on standardized test scores (if they were submitted). Need-based aid is determined by the Office of Financial Aid and is based on the information provided on the FAFSA and CSS Profile if submitted by the published deadlines.

I saw that …I never had one class that was not honors or AP and never had lower than an A. so it doesn’t really make sense…also my school does not weight
