If you apply ED and get accepted, you’re obligated to enroll. You will be expected to pull all of your other college applications if accepted to COW on ED.
My S was accepted ea, and then applied for the College Scholar award in January after receiving several emails from the school. The acknowledgment email says he’ll hear by April 1. Anyone know if that means around the end of March, or if decision likely earlier?
I am guessing Mid Feb.
Not too pleased with CoW right now. Son was accepted with nice award. He did not apply for College Scholar because his stats are below the recommended level. Even so, he kept getting emails after his acceptance, encouraging him to apply for CS. He ignored them until finally, he got a personalized one. At that point we thought he might actually have a decent chance, so he spent a bunch of time he hadn’t expected to writing the essay. Today he heard that he did not get it, in an email touting how many applied. I guess we were right initially that all the email “reminders” were just intended to make the award seem more selective. He didn’t expect to get it, so isn’t disappointed — but I’m disappointed with the tactics.
Got in on early action. Can we have a group for class of 2024? Insta or WhatsApp ?
Btw does Wooster only hand out merit aid? How much aid did you guys get in total? My total financial aid award is 47,500 USD per year
I understand your frustration. My child applied for the CS program with the EA app and was accepted (1520 SAT, 3.98 W GPA at a highly selective STEM magnet, with grade deflation and a college and grad school level classes). But his award was $35,000, which is the top of the range for merit aid that is not through CS and matched his merit aid pre-read. As far as I can tell CSS get no special benefit, like special dorms or early registration. CS is more of a vanity thing than a substantive designation. He probably would have gotten the same aid if he had saved the time and not done the essay.
We’re now getting weekly, “we need you to confirm attendance” emails, even though we have 7 schools to hear from in March and the EA acceptance deadline is 5/1. So, I agree, the recruitment is over the top. The only school that was worse was CWRU. That said, we are impressed with Wooster.
Good luck to your kid. In the end, not being a CS might be disappointing, but I will have little to no substantive impact on their academic experience or special opportunities…
Maybe we’ll see you at move in!
The top academic merit of $37,000 as a CS. My kid was a CS and got $35,000. You can also stack much smaller music, drama and/or Scottish arts scholarships, although we didn’t go that route.
The rest would be need based.
College Scholar is an award (scholarship), not a program. It is simply $.
Hi! Congratulations to all of your sons and daughters. My son was thrilled to get his acceptance along with generous academic merit to COW early on. We attended an accepted students weekend two weeks ago, and he spent the night in a dorm with a host. He and we were so impressed with The College of Wooster!! To top it off, when we arrived home from the trip, we found a letter to announce that he earned an acting scholarship!! It requires him to put in a certain amount of time to campus theater but does not require him to major in Theater arts. He is a classic undecided student that has a passion for acting . What a nice welcome home! He is waiting to hear from three more colleges and will attend the accepted student events for each before making a final decision, but Wooster is, along with one other, currently at the top of his list!
Is anyone else on this thread also interested in theater arts at least as an EC? Also if you have comitted to COW, what was the deciding factor for you?
My older daughter is a sophomore at COW, double majors in theater and history. She has a theater scholarship (in a addition to big merit) and it is very easy to put in the hours just by being involved. She started out acting but has switched to stage management and loves it. We live seven hours away so haven’t made it to every production, but have seen two main stage productions and have been extremely impressed with the quality of the program. COW is a very nurturing environment and the perfect spot for her. She did an overnight and that sealed the deal for her - she felt that she could “find her people” there and for my introvert that has definitely been the case and she is very happy and engaged.
Our D20 has also been accepted to COW with huge merit and the maximum dance scholarship. I doubt she will be attending because she likes one of her other options better. We don’t get any financial aid, so the merit money is very important and COW is definitely the best financial deal for her ($10k less than we’re paying for her sister). But since the theater and dance department is a joint program, we understand her concern about being intertwined with her sister and are very supportive of her other choice. But you should feel very good about the idea of your son and the theater program at COW!
Thank you for your review! We are also 7 hours away. Are you near Philly?
No, we’re in Virginia. Good luck as your son considers his great options!
Thank you! Best wishes to your second daughter too
