EA Class of 2022

Just made a CC account solely for this!
I got deferred
Applied to Electrical/Computer Engineering
MA resident, but I made it clear that I am actually German
1410 SAT (not a great test taker but really didn’t study well I admit)
4.16 WGPA
5/300 rank
Got a sibling who attends NU
Plent of EC activities including robotics, martial arts, science programs, and Model UN
Had a research internship at Northeastern last summer and even got a recommendation from northeastern staff, also submitted extra material from that internship on the portal. So if that does not show “”"“interest”""" in northeastern what does???
Also won some awards including Model UN

ED2 did screw a lot of us over. But hey, shouldn’t we have the upper hand over the rest of the regular decision pool?
I’m really concerned about my possibility of getting merit scholarships.
Also, does a deferral mean that we are basically not getting into the honors college? (I’m sure I wasn’t going to get in but hey should at least be a possibility)

Son accepted in Wisconsin with $20,000 Dean’s Scholarship, no Honors
CCIS - CS/Math major

ACT 35 (superscored over two sittings, 35’s across the board)
GPA 4.1 out of 4.3 scale, 4.65 weighted (one B+, rest of grades A+, A, or A-)
6 AP’s, 5 Honors (our school has gotten rid of a lot of Honors level courses), 2 dual enrolled
4 credits CS (no honors available), 5 credits math (shows dedication toward desired major)
4 credits fine arts (band, no honors available)

Letters of Recommendation - I assume are very good. Both his CS and AP Physics teachers love him
Common App Essay - Decent. Well written, but a bit cliche.

EC’s - A musician and an athlete
4 years rec baseball
4 years high school hockey
Off season rec hockey teams and camps
4 years Marching Band
2 years Drumline 1 (by audition)
Private percussion lessons

Jobs - hockey referee one year, worked at Target for 6 months

Honors
National Merit Commended Student
4 years school citizenship/academic award
4 years Tri-M (music honor society)
1 year NHS

Community service - nothing huge (around 20 hours/year), various types of service within the school and surrounding community. He did the usual volunteering at high school concessions, food banks, etc, but I think something that was interesting about him was that he was able to combine his music (Drumline 1) with community service - performing at Make A Wish fundraisers, welcoming veterans as they return home from Honor Flights, Performing at the school to welcome teachers back for the new year and welcoming incoming freshmen, performing at elementary schools to help grow the music program, etc.

Accepted
33 ACT
3.85UW/ 4.16W
10 APs, rest honors classes
Student council, cello, cheerleading, girl scouts, plus a couple fun clubs
only had 1 rec but it was from a teacher who really liked me and can write, so it was bomb
national merit, honor roll, ap scholar with distinction
essay was pretty good it was about hardship and stuff so i think it was good for colleges
plus im in louisiana so i think that helped my chances a lot

Reflection

Strengths: EC’s, Common App Essay
Weaknesses: SAT score, GPA
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I feel lucky to be deferred and not rejected, but I think my scores and grades just didn’t meet NEU’s standards.
What would you have done differently?: Retake the SAT again, not slack off freshman year
Where else did you apply? Penn State (accepted), Rutgers (accepted), SUNY Binghamton (accepted), SUNY University at Buffalo (accepted), SUNY University at Albany (accepted), SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY New Paltz, Macaulay Honors College, New York University, Boston University, Cornell, Barnard, UPenn, Columbia University

**Other Factors: **
Having an EDII option at NEU this year made it harder to get in ED.

General Comments & Advice:
The NEU EA 2022 thread was very helpful and provided much needed reassurance and information, so check any relevant threads!

@kmcc2018 Check the financial aid letter. If I’m not mistaken, need-based aid is what’s listed as Northeastern University Grant (it was right underneath the scholarship for me).

Accepted with 16k honors scholarship. Can this be stacked with national merit scholarship?

Decision: Accepted, $20,000/year in Dean Scholarship (no Honors)
Major: Cell and Molecular Biology
State: CA

10 APs in all including senior year

How to get into Honors Program/College, when not chosen during admission?
