Early Action - Class of 2024 Full Discussion Thread

End of March for the other 3. Penn State’s merit wasn’t anything but a loan, which didn’t help much. He got the top-tier at Clemson, although as many here may know, it was reduced pretty significantly compared to last year. It’s definitely the lowest-cost option for him, but the program is “up-and-coming” at best. He’ll hear from Schreyer Honors at Penn State next week, which might swing things. We’ll see. He may have an “ah-ha” moment when he hits Clemson’s campus, too. Anything could happen.

My son was accepted for Chemistry. 4.32 WGPA, 3.9 uw, 33 ACT. He has committed to Chapel Hill and will be withdrawing his application this weekend. He has withdrawn to all the other schools he was accepted to in hopes that other kids can move off waitlists. He loved VT but UNC has been his dream school since he was 5. Good luck everyone.

Accepted w Honors College
OOS
Animal and Poultry Sciences (pre-vet)
1350 SAT
4.0 uw, 4.59 w GPA
Lots of leadership, extracurriculars, and APs
Competitive magnet program
$11,000 awarded for merit (alumni honors pres. + ag scholarship)

Super excited congrats everyone!

Hello everyone! Current VT engineering student stopping by. I remembered that decisions came out this past week and decided to come back onto CC to do a little Ut Prosim and help answer questions. Been through this whole process twice as both a freshman applicant and a transfer, so I should be able to give as much insight as I can on the matter of admissions and next steps. I’m starting to get pretty involved around campus (may apply to be tour guide/lead an engineering info session), so I’m pretty excited to see a bunch of new faces this fall! Anyway, you can either PM me or ask me here if you have any questions. My family’s currently waiting for an RD decision for my brother, but at this point, he’s already content on saving money and going to NOVA for two years.

@2019boston Do you mind if I ask what major at RIT, and how much money did your child get there? My D will likely be deciding between RIT and VT. She is Packaging Science.

@Baf4527 Congratulations to your son. UNC is such a great school. @HokieCrazy I have heard great things about Clemson so hopefully your son will give it a chance. I know several kids who are going.

Can second this. We know 2 recent grads (Engineering) and a handful of other current students (mostly Business) and all had or are having very good experiences. Clemson definitely decide to up their game within the past 10 years and are heavily recruiting well-credentialed students in the mid-Atlantic.

How does a school know who will pay the OOS tuition and who won’t, especially not knowing what students received for merit at other schools?

Some have few good options for their in state school(s). Only good option may be private schools at 70k+.

40’s is a bargain when compared to 70’s.

You never know what is looked at in admissions - example: One rumor I had heard is that Virginia Tech Engineering red flags students applying who did not take the hardest math class in their school. So if they offer AP Calc and student only takes regular Calc … or the offer AB Calc and BC calc and student only takes AB Calc … they get red flagged and possibly don’t get accepted when GPA and SAT are otherwise well within acceptance range.

Goes to show you how lilttle things can make a big difference in admission - not just GPA / SAT.

@hastalavista Some schools determine this by zip code or FAFSA info.
Not saying if VT does or doesn’t but some do.

@cbl1 In general, Engineering programs like to see students have taken Calculus in HS. Not sure if BC matters though; many students choose to re-take Calc in college.

I had heard that VT actually DOES weed out applicants based off of if they took the hardest level available to them in high school or not. That can create some head-scratcher non-acceptances.

@hastalavista 40’s is only a bargain if you can afford it. Many people go into this application process thinking either they will get merit of FA and then when they get neither they either have to take big loans or go to a different school. Is it really worth 80k extra to go to VT vs a good state school in your home state.?

I think they put a big emphasis on those 4 essay prompts.

I was waitlisted with to architecture with a 1570 Sat/35 ACT, 4.0 unweighted GPA, a 3 week Paid Architectural Internship in Washington DC (I’m from Vermont), 3 Varsity sports (captain for 2 years), lots of other leadership—

Curious about other people who applied to architecture- what did you all do to get in? Definitely disappointed since VT has one of the top arch programs.

Anyone know when the financial aid will come out for Tech? Most of my friends got it already and I still haven’t.

I recruit a lot within the Packaging program. I can’t say enough good things about their staff. I have recruiters with my company that say they have been having better luck with kids being more well rounded out of the virginia tech program then from big ones like michigan state and Clemson.

But how does one effectively determine the hardest math class? Comparing AP Calc BC and a course like IB Math HL for example is difficult because these two classes are taught vastly different, but could be equal in difficulty.

I got waitlisted in engineering, reaally bummed.
1490 SAT
3.8 W GPA
all the hardest classes my school offers and a lot of EC
My dad went there

Would they accept at Letter of Continued Interest and if so where should I send

Some are saying they don’t look at … but I don’t see the harm in sending one. As I’m not familiar with waitlist status on the portal - I’m assuming when waitlisted they don’t have a place to accept your spot on the waitlist.

If you are wait listed they do ask for you to accept your spot on the wait list
