thx for confirming
Curious wonder whyâŠthey will send or encourage waitlisted students to accept the spot on the waitlist?
Because when they do go to the waitlist they donât want to be calling students and offering admission to those that donât have VT as their top choice. You most likely have a very good percentage of students on the VT waitlist that have already crossed them off their list. VT needs to make sure not to continue to spend time on those applicants.
oh yea - and those on the waitlist are high achieving students they would like to come to VT if they can fit them in.
Accepting place on waitlist shows that you are highly likely to accept if given the offer.
No matter what they say there is a type of ranking to those on the waitlist and accepting onto the waitlist means you will get the call before those that donât ask to stay on the list.
Another reason for a ranking on waitlist not to be given out. You may be #5 on your departments waitlist but #2,#3,#4 didnât elect to stay on the waitlist. Now your #2 really. Or more like it ⊠VT is your top school and they send out a list saying your #64 on the waitlist for your department. You may give up and move on. But say only 20 people acted to remain on waitlist. Your #64 spot may be a #20 spot really. Heck by the time they take off waitlist then hypothetically - they may have only 10 students in that department come off waitlist and the #64 spot originally could then very well be one of those 10 students.
@pkulis I hear you. Daughter in the same boat as you for architecture. Canât imagine who they took if not you with your incredibly high stats and experience. I wish more architecture students were on these threads commenting. Super disappointing all around.
Iâm pretty sure once you opt out of the waitlist the student has communicted they are going elsewhere, so admissions wouldnât likely contact that student.
Yes, I was commenting on the poster asking why virginia tech would want to promote people putting themselves on the waitlist (marking themselves to remain). Of course they would want to know the ones no longer to contact. But I assume if they have to few accept place on waitlist (which seems highly unlikely) they would look at others they had waitlisted but didnât respond.
You can be sure that VT will make OOS students the priority when/if they go to the waitlist. They need those OOS students to pay the bills.
I may be wrong, but Itâs my understanding that if the student does not select to be on the wait list then they are no longer considered as an active applicant. I donât think there is an inbetween âundecidedâ category that the university would follow up with.
I wouldnât go that far - I guess it will depend on their yield and how many accept out of state vs. not.

Itâs a mute point anyhow as I canât see situation where they wouldnât have plenty that affirmed.

They want to know who is really interested. Lets say someone either doesnt want to wait that long to find out or is just ready to move on. There could be say 3000 that were offered WL but only 2500 want to be continue on WL. Just makes to odds of getting in better i guess
1400 SAT score with more As than Bs. A decent number of ECs but not record breaking by any means. I showed a strong spike in STEM, and go to a top 10 HS in the nation in state (not TJ). I got waitlisted for engineering. My friends with 1500s and higher with all As couldnât get into honors college, which also suprised me.
As my top choice this really hurt. Congrats to everyone who got in and I wish you sucess at VT or wherever else you go! To those who got waitlisted or rejected: we can still be great without VT, and there are so many options out there. Probably for the last time, Go Hokies!
Has anyone got an email invite to register for Hokie Focus April 4th and 5th? We have got nothing and registration is meant to open today?
Hasnât come out yet - supposed to have been today but they must be finalizing. Iâm sure email will go out very soon. What I would do now is decide which day your going to chose - - and book hotel room.

I was accepted for architecture out of state (NC). 1390 SAT/32 ACT and class rank 1/44. I didnât realize that architecture was so competitive. The only reason I could think of for waitlisting some of the higher stats applicants is that they might assume you will get into better schools and are not likely to attend Virginia Tech? I did attend a Virginia Tech architecture summer camp, but I didnât mention it in my application and donât know if it factors in at all.

@2020architect Thanks for the info. My daughterâs stats are good but I donât think high enough that VTech waitlisted her for âyield protection.â I am really left scratching my head on this one as we thought this was a âmatchâ school and she is really interested in the program. Are you from Virginia? Perhaps that has something to do with it. We are west coast. Certainly hoping there is movement on the waitlist but definitely not optimistic.
Yes, my son received the email today, at 3:56pm. April 4-5 is the start of spring break, so he wonât be attending.
The email says Virginia Tech Gateway. Students will join hokie focus on Sunday.
That is a different full weekend program offered to some students
