When Jimmy Carter asked people to turn the thermostats down to 68, we all said "Mom, there are people who have their thermostats above 68, they are turning them DOWN to 68.’ She told us to shut up. Our house was at 61 during the day, up to 63 for the evening, and back to 60-61 at night.
@gearmom sorry. I hope it is restored quickly! We somehow managed to avoid it this time, but winds are still high and temps are falling.
The aftermath:
Anyone who didn’t shovel yesterday is in trouble.
It’s currently 10 degrees, with a wind chill of -10. And that’s pretty much where it’s expected to stay until tonight, when wind chills will drop to -20. OUCH.
I would imagine that snow is going to stay exactly where it is, hard as a rock, until it warms up on Monday. Not that I really know… I’m nice and warm in my jammies.
Thank goodness for our super insulated house and wood boiler! We keep the thermostat at 68 or higher during the day. 65 at night. Our first house was built in 1920 and after living in that drafty thing we said, “Never again!”
We have 10 or so inches of snow in our driveway…and the temp is…8. Rising to maybe 10.
Luckily no one has to go anywhere this morning. Clearing will be done in cribs and drabs. At least the sun is out…and right now…it’s not windy.
I am flying to Chicago today (from DC) for family reasons. Just checked and at this time my sister’s flight out of Boston is on and scheduled on time :). Hopefully she is able to get to Logan.
@FallGirl Roads around Boston aren’t too bad, despite many inches of snow (10-12 inches in most places). My D is home on break and had to be in NYC for an audition callback today. She was going to take Amtrack but it was cancelled. She got up at 6am to drive—took my SUV. I She called a while ago to say the main roads were OK and that at least one lane was open. She took I-95.
Its a whopping 17 degrees here inthe south! Haven’t even gone out to get the paper yet. DS’s flight to JFK looks like its showing as on time (well dont know the exact flight but the airline he is flying shows all as departing and arriving on time). Hope he dresses appropriately!
Glad you all are staying warm! We’re at 28 degrees here. We’re under an advisory until 11 (primarily for black ice) until temps get above freezing.
We have been in the 20s and 30s in Texas, even lower at night, but are finally going to warm back up to the 50s. I’m leaving later this morning for a four day trip to San Diego with D1, and am looking forward to 60s and 70s.
Stay warm and safe everyone. Enjoy your silver lining-time at home away from school and work.
Thanks @Bromfield2 . And good luck to your D!
I was encouraged when I looked at the forecast. It will hit the 40’s by Wednesday in NYC and then jump to 48 by Friday! That’s progress.
I am surprised at posters being able to keep their thermostats so low. I am always cold so we usually keep ours at a steady 72 but if we have a fire going I turn it down to 70. I make up for it in the summer – if there is no one home I will turn the air off in the house. I am one of those people who really dislike air conditioning and love the balmy summer air. H and D cannot live without it so when they are home I spend most of my time on the back terrace as the house feels frigid to me.
National weather service claims there are 20 MPH winds here…gusting up to 40MPH. I can tell you first hand…right now…there isn’t even a small breeze!
15 inches here (news claims more) outside Boston. The commuter rail isn’t running so there’s a line of people at the station trying to get an Uber. Surge pricing of 4x is in effect.
@thumper1, but have you seen Jim Cantore in your town? That’s what REALLY indicates bad weather! :))
We didn’t get enough snow for Jim Cantore!
Jim Cantore is a jerk. I had lunch with some lady friends on Monday, which included his ex-wife Tamra. He dumped her after her Parkinson’s diagnosis. Lovely.
Stupid plow not only knocked out our mailbox, they then proceeded to hit the cable box by the street curb, so we also lost internet/cable/phone. Thank heaven we have cell phones.
When they hit the mailbox 3 years ago, they replaced it - but not until the spring. So not only will I have to go to the post office to get our mail for the rest of the winter, I will also have to replace all of the daffodils/tulips/irises that we planted by the mailbox.
I deserve better than this
My mailbox takes a hit every winter. It’s a state road and the state won’t repair it (they say it’s a right-of-way). Ugh. It has to wait until spring, so I’m in the same boat.
Folks around here put up barriers around their mailboxes…a frames of plywood, for example.
