We got an official 14 inches vs the 4-8 inches predicted. That’s on top of the foot of snow we already had on the ground from 2 storms Christmas week. Very pretty. Temps have dropped but the wind has as well. Very few power outages in the state from this storm despite fairly high winds. The snow is light powder and it is usually the heavy snow that brings down limbs.
In typical fashion up here, kids are back in school today with a two hour delay this morning. Got to save those snow days for when you really need them. Just put on the big coat.
Our district had two “snow” days for the big windstorm in October (three days for the high school, which was out of power longer). So the kids already have to make up 3 (or 4) days in June. Two-hour delay today makes sense!
@thumper1 , our town had a 90 minute delay! Saw on Twitter that it’ll be a “topic of conversation” on the news tonight. I’m sure the “in town” roads were okay, but the western part of town is pretty hilly - I’m sure it was a mess.
I spoke of the post office unfairly in an earlier post – they did not close yesterday. They just didn’t have the staff available to open on time, but it was business as usual once somebody was able to get there.
Two hour delay and big coats here. Roads have a layer of packed snow, but that’s usual for this time of year. I got to the post office and grocery store fine. Did have a final bit of snow clearing to do down at our mailboxes. Instead of knocking them over, city plows give some leeway; residents get the final bit. I got the shovel out of my car and did a quick and hopefully adequate job around ours on my way out.
Our mailbox was embedded in an impenetrable snow bank for most of March of S’s senior year of HS. My obsession with his application results was only magnified by the necessity of going to the post office every day to pick up the mail. One of the post office staff had a nephew who was a professor at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth. When the big envelope came from Dartmouth, he was very happy. He handed it to me and said, “Here’s the GOOD envelope!”
I took my dog to the dogpark this afternoon and met up with two friends, one a woman about my age and another a young guy, probably about late 20s-30. We decided to try to walk around “the loop” outside the park. It’s a trail almost a mile long around a huge landfill hill outside the park. He walked in front, breaking the trail through the 2 ft of snow. We got to the top of the first hill, where the wind really hits you–think Dr. Zhivago, with Omar Sharif staggering through the steppe–and she and I chickened out. Seriously, I was worried that my nose was getting frost bite, so I did up the face mask part of my parka, and my glasses immediately fogged up so I couldn’t see anything.
Other than my nose, I was fine. Next time I’ll bring a scarf.
Just missed a phone call. When I called back I reached an answering machine for “Paul, FEMA Region 1.” Region 1 is for New England so I figured it might be an extreme cold warning but there was no message left so now I’m curious. Has anyone else gotten such a call?
@wheatonmom I stand corrected. Wow, troupers in your town. Those kids will be happy in June. It seems like no one is budging here around me in Arlington. That was quite a storm.
@JustaMom5465 your town IIRC has several parts…and two of them had no school.
We don’t have that issue around our town anymore because in a very close town, one day they had a delay when everyone else was off…and a school bus full of kids had an accident on a slippery hilly road.
@thumper1 just one district, and that one encompasses the whole town. “East mytown” is actually a separate town and school district.
Mytown, North- and West-mytown had school on a 90 min delay…yikes!
Soooooo cold this morning, even my Labradors want to stay inside.
My dog wanted to take a walk. She exploded with glee when she saw the snowmobiles had come though and broken a trail. She was ready to turn around as soon as I was, which was about half our usual distance, but got enough to be happy. @JustaMom5465 tell your Labs I like the way they think! @lookingforward She doesn’t use any of the multiple cleared areas; deep drifts seem to be preferable!
Aaaaannnnd it may hit 50 here by the end of the week.
@JustaMom5465 so…was it on the news? I couldn’t find it!
East Your Town had it right. 90 minute delay for the rest…ridiculous. What was the superintendent there trying to prove? That he or she was ever so much smarter than everyone else around him/her?
I have a friend who arrived at JFK on an international flight just pass midnight last night and the passengers couldn’t deplane for more than 6 hours after landing. Also, there’s no one to unload the luggage at the airport and some people have to wait up to 8 hours for their luggage… What a mess.
