East Coast snowicane

Ugh! I heard something similar about JFK! So sorry. Fortunately my DS and his fiancee landed at JFK around 6ish yesterday evening and texted me from a cab they were in going to the hotel. I feel really badly for the wedding party out on LI!!

-15 and windy this morning. I had to go to the grocery store at 7 am because I needed ingredients for a crock pot meal - friends are coming over this evening. It wasn’t as bad as I expected. Well, until I got home and realized I’d forgotten something and had to go right back!

Looks like we’ll be lucky to hit double digits in north Jersey today, going down to negative numbers tonight. My poor old house can’t handle much more of this.

@MaineLonghorn, I think you win the award for hardiest CCer!

There is a slight chance of freezing rain Monday in a certain southern city that might possibly keep a certain airplane from bringing a certain visitor to a certain football game that day. One can hope.

DH braved the cold and wind yesterday to snowblow the driveway and sidewalk. Unfortunately we live on a hill where the wind tends to blow across the driveway. I just went down the drive to get the mail (it’s 8degrees, wind chill -11) and my side of the driveway has been recovered by snow, in some parts to the same depth as the snow on the grass. He’s sure not going out today to reclear my half of the driveway. By tomorrow afternoon, the wind should subside, so maybe then.

Have to go out to hold D1’s hand while she applies to renew her passport. Not sure I’ll get lunch out of this, lol.

Yes, warmer next week.

I’m doing the same thing for my daughter on Tuesday!

I am missing something. What’s there to hold hands for in applying for a passport?

You have to go someplace (the library for us) and talk to someone, sign documents, and give him/her a check. Don’t know why that’s so difficult, but it seems to be.

It’s what my daughters and I call “mom and girl time.”

D1 was so confident she had a few years left on hers, only checked after I mentioned mine would expire mid trip.

At least this passport will last ten years!

For the price…it should last ten years!

DH needs to renew his…guessing DS does too. Mine is fine until 2019.

The girls’ last photos had Logan TSA laughing. They must have been around 14 and 15, but looked like profile trouble makers.

My D was scheduled to fly out of Newark last night. Her plane arrived on time from Europe but was delayed 2+ hours in Newark. When I dropped her off at 8:30, the terminal looked crowded but traffic outside the airport was manageable.

She was lucky that they didn’t board until they were ready to go, and the flight did get out around 1:15 this morning. Her spring study abroad semester starts Monday and while it’s not exactly “sunny Spain” yet, it’s in the 40s there, which is downright balmy compared to 12 degrees here.

@thumper1 I was stuck at work late so can’t say for sure that it was on…I’ll pm you the tweet I saw about it

I thought I was done but spoke too soon. DS’s rebooked flight for this morning was cancelled. I called to rebook; Chase travel rewards got him on a flight at 5 pm from JFK to Atlanta then Atlanta to Charleston. I thought great the airport’s open (because I got a confirmation that he was booked). Delta then canceled the 2nd leg of the flight. DS arranged to rent a car from Atlanta. He goes to JFK; Delta tells him they have no record of him being on the flight. Guess what – Delta cancelled it (without notifying him) and rebooked him for Monday. What a complete and total nightmare. I didn’t realize a travel agent or airline can book a flight into an airport that’s closed.

I guess I don’t fly enough but what is the norm – when one leg of your flight is cancelled does the airline automatically cancel you out of the first flight? DH said to call Delta next time and tell them you still want the first leg. Hold time was 2 hours. I told DS to check in online; he was not able to. That should have been a sign.

Wasted cab ride (ka Ching). Things could be worse.

Vent over.

Well…I was flying SW once. The second. Leg of my tip was definitely cancelled…so they cancelled my first leg too…and I had to rebook. It was really an annoyance to me because I have relatives in the connecting location…and I could, have stayed with them for days. Anyone could have had my seat for DAYS. But no…I had to stay in Cleveland four extra days.

I’m surprised to hear that some of your schools were open this week. Did they get the week before Christmas off, rather than this week? Or do they not get two weeks ?

@alwaysamom

This was the short vacation. Schools around here had an early dismissal because of weather on Friday the 22. Most would have had a full day that Friday if the weather had been fine.

Then, they had the whole following week off…with school resuming Tuesday January 2.

None of the public schools around here get two full weeks of time off around the Christmas holiday anymore. That went the way of the Dino years ago…like 35 years ago.

The private schools have two full weeks off.
