East Coast snowicane

We got out just in time, flew home to FL late last night after spending 10 days in MA and NH with family and friends. I’m from MA but this trip was tough with the record setting lows. We went in to Boston on the warmest day we could get- it was 20 degrees! We come up almost every year at this time but rarely have snow or freezing temperatures. Found pictures from last Christmas When we had gone on a hike and S23 was wearing shorts!

This trip has really made D19 think hard about college - she is not sure she can handle that kind of cold. While we were ta my mom’s house with nothing to do she was miserable. Then we headed up to NH to see our close friends whose daughters are my D’s best friends. It made her realize the cold is more tolerable when you are hanging out with buddies and living through the bitter cold together! I am sure I scared her away from our college though (St. Lawrence) - every time they would say it was cold I would lookup the weather in Canton, NY - now that is cold!!

Blizzard of 78 I was 6 years old. What I remember best was being able to jump off of our second story porch into the yard because the snow was so high!

My S22 is wearing shorts even when it’s sub-zero, ha!

Often, when we have a big storm with a lot of trees and branches down and extensive outages–as in this past October–it seems as if most of what was coming down had come down, and we don’t have big outages for a while.

I’m hoping that works this time.

@Consolation, I hope you’re right!

Even using our wood boiler, we’re burning more oil than usual. Yesterday, I called for an oil delivery - they said they will make it here on Friday.

Big winds causing power outages, then temps 20 to 40 degrees below average is not a good combination. (Yeah, it’s supposed to get colder over the weekend.)

It’s snowing in Savannah.

I guess I should call my dad in Augusta!
S2 was still in Boston for the 2015 storms – he’s 6’4" and the snow was as deep as he is tall. Tufts actually cancelled classes.

Expect we will get wind and cold, not much snow. We’re just far enough from I-95, which seems to be the dividing line here for who gets the precipitation.

@MaineLonghorn , I just called for a delivery…they said NEXT Friday! This was after getting a busy signal on oth their phone numbers all morning!

Wow, that’s not good!

One of the big issues, NOAA says, is weight of this snow, followed by freezing temps (sounds like a shoveling nightmare.) Then the winds and tree limbs. But also that we can’t get the usual moderating warmer air off Cape Cod Bay. He laughed, it’s useless, frozen.

They’re saying to figure out where it’s warmer, a friend’s, the office, etc. Yeah, right.

But this reminds me of the Married with Children, where they escaped the heat by setting up lawn chairs in the grocery store.

Storm of '78 - I remember driving in our vw bug up the NJ Turnpike to the airport. My parents, sister and I were going on a Caribbean vacation with neighbors who had moved out of country. I remember my mom having hot flashes and driving with the window cracked. We got out in the nick of time. That was the trip where my mom ordered a Fresca in Puerto Rico and they gave her a strawberry shake.

It’s still snowing here in Savannah. We’ve been out in it twice. School’s now closed tomorrow too.

Is it accumulating much, @apraxiamom?

Yes. Over 3 inches so far.

Blizzard warning now for Maine, down the east coast to just above Cape Cod. Flooding expected too.

Snow is sticking in Charleston SC (I’m looking at Twitter pix).

The snow up here is forecast to be light and fluffy.

Of course, both our kids at home have plans for tomorrow. They are predicting travel to be “difficult or impossible,” so I think they will have to cancel.

It’s going to be cold, cold, cold. The NWS of Milwaukee (where they know their cold) puts out this advisory:

If you see someone out in the cold who is unusually underdressed, appears confused, shivering or is unable to speak, then:

  • Check on them.
  • Call for help.
  • Do something!
  • The assistance you offer may just save someone's life!

[Exclamation points theirs, says Fang.]

sigh…S and his GF decided a couple weeks ago that they would rent a “Tiny House” as a holiday treat for each other. So, yesterday, they left Boston and drove up to rural New Hampshire to get “off the grid” for a couple days. I’m pretty sure they go back to Boston tomorrow. Afternoon. I have no idea if he has checked the latest forecast, or even if he has service and CAN check. He’s a weather nut so I’m sure he had an idea that snow was coming… but it feels like the forecast has gotten worse since yesterday.

Trying not to worry…deep breath…

Crap! AA moved DS up to a flight this morning so, instead of maybe getting an extra day with him, he’s already gone. There is no good reason on earth to recall the corps four days prior to the start of school just so they can sit around shivering in those unevenly heated barracks. What’s the point of that? Oh, right, there is no point. It’s the military.

Folks with wells, fill your bathtubs tonight so you can flush your toilets in the event of a power outage. And stock up on drinking water. Or wine. The liquor aisle at Hannaford was packed this morning. Apparently, booze beats French toast up here in Maine.
