hugs to you, @ChoatieMom. That’s a shame.
@consolation, I hope you’re right about all the at-risk trees already being down. That October storm was rough and some of our neighbors had no power for 6 days.
@ChoatieMom , I’m sorry. That sucks.
Just got back from a grocery store run. We had been using up surplus from the holidays and the cupboards were bare unless we wanted to live off frozen Christmas cookies. Our Hannaford was a little busier than usual. Not bad and the shelves were well stocked. No run on milk or bread. Came home in time for the local news station’s forecast and we’re in the 4-8 inch zone. Many family members are in the 8-12+ inch zone.
As usual, the only concern would be losing power. Just got the recorded warning call from the power company.
ETA: now I’m watching the national news and they are sure hyping the storm, plenty of hyperbole. Huge contrast between national news and are more subdued local coverage
Bummer…just got notification that my son’s flight got canceled and automatically rescheduled to the next day. Thankfully they sent notification before we left for the airport! He has a meet this Saturday so I’m hoping he will get ample rest or at minimum get to Ithaca before the meet. The upside is that we get another night with him!
We’re supposed to be in the 10-12" range. It’s nice working at home - I enjoy storms.
Well, my 2 daughters are off.
And my husband is off.
I still haven’t gotten a phone call.
And my son works at a supermarket; I’m sure he’s crazy busy today but I hope they close tomorrow.
My husband and older daugther just ran to the supermarket… not for bread and milk, but for chips and cookies
Well…my son…so far has a boarding pass for his 5 am flight on Delta…and no cancellation noticificstion…yet.
I’m betting it will be cancelled.
My husband seems to think it’s going to be fine at 5 am at Bradley airport.
It sucks.
@thumper1 I would not want him flying out at 5 AM. I doubt it will be fine.
Getting ready for power outages in winter. Game face on. Crazy, crazy shopping conditions all day.
@gearmom…I agree…but i am staying out of it!
Snow isn’t supposed to start in western CT until 4 am. Supposedly it will pick up at 7.
Stay tuned…I think it was stupid not to rebook today…for Friday sometime.
My D (who is an MFA acting student at Brown) is home (in MA) on break; she auditioned for a summer stock theater at the end of her semester and got a call back for this Friday in NYC. After weighing lots of options (she has a classmate who got a call back too) they decided to take a very early morning Acela train on Friday to NYC. (Audition is at noon.)
I am in Central MA and we are supposed to get 6-10 inches of snow; school is already called off for tomorrow.
We watched for cancellations for hours, for a 7am flight, during that March 2015 storm that closed Boston. Finally got word after midnight.
Bromfield, good move. I remember D2 and her bf leaving the day before and driving through a rotten blizzard to get to auditions at Yale. No provisions to cancel for weather. Unnerving.
We’re hearing 8-12". Yay, the U is closed.
Our school district has already announced it’s closed tomorrow. That’s pretty unusual - they usually wait until morning to cancel classes.
@Bromfield2 Good luck to her but it will be iffy getting out of MA on Friday morning.
Our school is closed tomorrow and I spoke to the janitor who thinks it will be closed Friday since they probably won’t be able to shovel out all schools tomorrow night.
SFO was packed at 5am! Assume many were trying to get ahead of the storm. With Florida getting colder weather I guess DS won’t need shorts for his team’s training trip to “sunny” Florida. Just glad he has some time before heading back to the frozen NorthEast.
Good luck to those of you braving the storm.
Snow is nothing. Electricity is all.
Our choir director moved practice from the traditional Thursday eve to this (Wednesday) eve. I went to Shaws on the way home, and some areas looked ransacked: bread, eggs, orange juice, chicken (which is on sale
), etc.
First thing tomorrow morning I’m going to make sure to bathe and wash my hair. Nothing worse than going into a multi-day outage with dirty hair because you planned to do it later that day!
Well, it would be worse to have the pipes freeze. At least we are on public water, which might mean we could salvage the situation by letting the faucets trickle…
If I were a praying person, I would be praying to doG that the power doesn’t go out.
Oh heavens…I forgot to get orange juice
Why are we up so early? No snow yet.
Bromfield, I originally read it as leaving ahead of Fri, sorry. It’s forecasting clear on Fri am… But whether she’s training from Boston or Providence, will the roads be good? Maybe allow extra time.
Can I just say: I LOVE snow days!!
I’ve been wide awake since about 3 for no reason at all except that I’m not a good sleeper.
But I just sent about a dozen emails to parents, since we’re missing parent conferences tonight.
It’s not yet 7 am, so I can spend the rest of the day enjoying the storm. I’m a huge storm geek, I just love them! Then this afternoon, after the snow but before the big drop in temps, we can dig out our property, my friend’s, our 4 cars and her 2.
I took a roast beef out of the freezer yesterday. I’ll either make a pot roast or regular roast beef, depending on my mood.
And, as @Consolation said, it’s all about power-- though it’s rare that we lose it. (Even in Superstorm Sandy, we were in the lucky 10% of Long Island that never lost power. We did lose part of our roof, but not out power
) Temps are supposed to be near zero by the weekend, so it’s a real concern for everyone.
