East Coast snowicane

They’re telling people if they’re cold, to head for public places that will be open and warm, like the libraries. But how to get there? And when they close?

Here we’re more concerned about the extraordinary blowing winds.

–Have you seen the photos of it from Scotland and Wales! Yikes! :open_mouth: Nine people dead, falling trees.

More oil supposed to be delivered this AM ordered two days ago.

Stocked up on water–which shuts down when electricity to well pump fails. Also bought energy bars, crackers, canned fish. Forgot bread!

Showered and shampooed, in case.

Insulated like crazy beginning two days ago: bubblewrap (my own inventive use,) new cell blinds lined with aluminum; caulked every crack everywhere; put rubber weather stripping around storm door frame–etc.

I believe in the two pronged approach: defense against cold getting in, and a big dry wood pile.

I just wish three years ago I had bought the large, name brand fireplace stove insert, instead of this rinky-dink, ineffective, falling-apart, cheapo from the big box store. The customer reviews were better than the product, and it was a fortune anyway to have installed.

Getting ready to head into work, keeping my fingers crossed the generator does not fail if we lose electricity, we’ve had some real issues since mid-December. I filled my tub (well water), took my shower, removed everything that was loose around the yard, and gassed the car. D went to stay with her Dad. Stocked up on cat food and litter. I asked around for someone to plow me out if necessary but can’t find anyone so if we get more than a few inches of snow apparently I’ll be parking at the end of the road and trudging back and forth for a few days. Snow forecast for my area is decreased now to 2-4", praying it stays that way. I almost always lose power and don’t really have a contingency plan for that except to work a lot and maybe sleep elsewhere if needed. Good luck everyone! See you on the other side

Today I have a love/hate relationship with VPN. Will be putting in a full day from home, while H, who can’t work remotely, was told to stay home.

Still no word from S…

Thumper1, did your S get out this morning?

Snow just started here. Latest forecast says 9 to 15 inches expected.

Snow has moved out from Savannah, but since temps are still below freezing, nothing can melt. I have my doubts about school tomorrow too, since we only have a brief window of above-freezing temps today. At least the weather and snow gives my Ohio-bound S18 a chance to experience likely Ohio weather. We’re going to shop for coats and boots (taking him for a campus visit next week), once streets clear.

Hope you all don’t lose power! Good luck everyone!

Our post office is closed. I feel naive for being shocked.

They upped our totals to 3-5” so I canceled my hair appt that’s later this afternoon. I can wait until next week if my stylist can’t fit me tomorrow or Saturday. I don’t think our winds are going to be strong enough for widespread power outages.

S in Boston is working from home today. Hoping they don’t lose power. They have a gas fireplace but I don’t know if you need electricity for it.

Out totals are up too: 8-15 for all of LI, with a blizzard warning.

I’m calling mom in a while. She’s fine, nice and cozy. I called her yesterday to make sure she was prepared. but I want to touch base anyway. If she does lose power, one of my sisters lives a few blocks away and has a fireplace.

Was up since 1 am checking on weather/school closing/practice cancelation notice, lol. Emailed DS’ coach whether there will be practice at 3:45am, coach emailed back at 4 stating “if u can drive safely then come!” Lol. The snow is powdery and about 1” thick when we left the house at 4:15, saw lots of zigzagging animal footprints (jaywalking dear?) on the road which is kind of cute. Son said a fellow swimmer arrived 30’ late because he was behind a car that crashed to the rail! Finally got the school closing call at 6 am, did a little snow dance.
When picking him up at 6:30, the snow is about 2” thick and driving conditions r worse, saw two stucked car on the road and a young man running!!! It was 20F and pretty dark! Don’t know what he was thinking.
Will be even colder tomorrow so I am guessing it might be another snow day.

And hope everyone has enough food/booze and no power outage.

DS got out of Hartford on time…5:35 am flight. Got a text from him from Detroit…plane was leaving there.

He is on his way to Phoenix!

Whew!

@makesmesmart, those conditions would be considered pretty good for running up here! What made me shake my head was seeing a runner at -15 in the wind the other day!

It’s a balmy 20 degrees here. Feels positively mild after the preceding week. It’s a fine snow so far, doesn’t look like the heavy wet stuff that brings down trees and branches. (Still trying to convince myself that we will not in for another stint in the cold and dark…beside the pipes, I am worried about some of my houseplants.)

25 here. Right now, the light and powdery stuff you can just push the shovel through. (I did, just to the sidewalk.)
Our neighbor, raised on the Canadian border, hasn’t gone out yet. He’s sort of our canary.

Found out at dinner time last night that two of my kids, who go to school locally, had a 2hr delay both today AND tomorrow (tomorrow due to the cold temps forecast and fear of refreeze of sidewalks and roads}. My ninth grader goes to h.s. about 45 mins away. We were right on the edge of the predicted path of the storm and his school is further west, teetering even further on the edge. His school notified us a 5am this morning that his school also had a 2hr delay. Then at 6am, phone rang again announcing closure of our local school, and another notification shortly thereafter my ninth grader’s school was closing too. That was a bit of relief b/c tho the roads don’t appear to be bad up by his school, just getting out of my area would have been problematic as it’s very icy. And then I️ didn’t have to listen to the complaining that he had school but his siblings didn’t!

Still snowing here east of DC but I’m guessing we won’t have more than 2-3 inches. The wind is really picking up as the back end of the storm approaches. Dh made it to work about 5miles away but said the local roads are pretty icy. Unfortunately salt does not work well in these cold temps.

Older son turns 17 y/o today so I told him his first birthday gift was getting the day off from school and sleeping in! Now I’m hoping my parents will be able to make his birthday dinner. I’m not sure the roads will be any better since the temps won’t be rising at all today.

@4kids4us my dd turns 17 today as well (she’s my youngest) happy bday to your ds!

Yayyyy, S is back in Boston, safe and sound

@NEPatsGirl No teenagers that you can pay to shovel you out? DS3 and friends make a killing during snow storms.

Everyone is showered. All cars gassed. Premade dinners. Will just make as much food as I can.

SO GLAD I forced the issue and replaced our snowblower… it arrived on Dec 8.

My big strong 19 year old son is on call at the firehouse all day… who knew?? (He joined in October; this is his first storm.) My girls… well, I love them to death, but they can only be described as “scrawny”,lol

So when it finally stops snowing and blowing, my husband can get the walk and driveway done, and that of my neighbor, and the girls and I will go out and dig out 4 or 5 cars.

Big coastal flooding going on right now.
