Is it worth it to shovel today or will it just blow back? But will it be shovelable tomorrow?
@DadTwoGirls, I only have one bag on chips.
We have no gas for our snowblower but I think our neighbor we share it with does. Hopefully, he’ll come get the blower later and do both our driveways. Even though it’s not a lot, with the temps falling into single digits it will freeze if we don’t do it today and it gets packed down by cars.
DH was filling up generator and snow blower with gas, then went to the grocery store. All of a sudden, a frantic store manager came walking down the aisle - “I smell gasoline - does anyone else smell gas?” Oops.
Are you still in the business @doschicos ?
Working remotely has been acceptable to the shops I know for many years now. It is now fairly common practice to have the primary office at one place, the disaster recovery site at another, and data center(s) at other sites still.
@emilybee Try adding a bit of cinnamon to the batter if you want to try something new. You won’t miss the vanilla.
@hebegebe Yes to disaster recovery sites, no to working remotely from home for many functions. Disaster recovery sites are still corporate property with the same precautions and security. Administrative support coming in on such days is pretty silly as it should just be essential personnel.
My flight to JFK tmro morning was cancelled. I looked to see what happened today with the same flight. It was diverted to Atlanta and then cancelled. So if I had gone today I would be stuck in Atlanta. We will see if I go on Saturday. (It was to be a short trip, so not sure if it is worth going.)
I think I have cinnamon! How much do you think should I use? A tsp or more?
I think a teaspoon would be good, @emilybee. You can always start with less and add more if you like it.
South-central CT here. Our mail carrier gave up and returned to the post office-- it was just too hard going. Very sensible.
DH’s employer was closed today, but he’ll have to go in tomorrow, so we will be clearing this evening when it finally stops.

DH took a PTO day. No one was in his office. But whatever…that’s their policy. He probably could have gotten there this morning…but he would have had to spend the night.
Supposedly this was going to stop by…now. But I think they just extended the time to 5 ish. Gusty winds!
Oh…and I finally checked the flights out of Bradley. Everything was cancelled after about 10. Most flights before that wer also cancelled as many go via Baltimore…and that wasn’t a go to airport today.
DS’s flight was the only one that went to Detroit where his connection was.
DS got safely to Newark last night on his rescheduled flight and spent the night at the airport Hilton in anticipation of catching one of the West Point buses back to post this morning. No dice. Buses are not running until tomorrow – but WP still won’t change the Thursday recall deadline. And the hotels are price gouging, of course. Last night was $90, tonight will be $249. He thinks this is all big fun and is enjoying the hotel amenities and extra day away from the gray prison.
Adding to the stress, DH’s company moved our flight to Dublin, originally scheduled for Saturday, up to tomorrow due to flight options and wanting to avoid stopping anywhere on the east coast. So, instead of going through JFK on Saturday, we’re headed up to San Fran tomorrow and a direct flight from there. It makes sense, but I’ve never been on a plane longer than five or six hours and am dreading the ten-hour leg. Thank God for alcohol.
BTW: It’s 75 and sunny here.
Neighbor came for snowblower and will do both our driveways, plus my other neighbor’s whose wee snowblower died the other day, and the elderly neighbor’s on my other side. He’s retired so is home to do all this. Getting more windy out. It’s been pretty still most of the day.
“but WP still won’t change the Thursday recall deadline”
Military bureaucracy at its finest. How frustrating.
Enjoy the trip, @ChoatieMom. As long as flights have in seat entertainment, I’m usually good on long hauls. If you’re flying coach, pack some snacks because the food will suck and you need some nibbles with your drinks.
In Boston area, temperature will start dropping tonight. I’m going to clean it up this evening. I think it’s supposed to slow down a bit around 5-6. I think the early stuff had a bit of moisture in it whereas it looks like powder now. I figure if I can snow blow the stuff with the moisture, even if the powder blows back, it will still be easy to clean up a second time. If I wait until morning, it’s going to be rock solid.
@ChoatieMom yep…my Phoenix son sent us a text when he got off of his plane…just so we would know the nice teams there. I wondering what he did to stash the HUGE down jacket he wore leaving here!
I am so done with winter but, sadly, it isn’t done with me. My office was open today but I had to get to court. I had H drive and even he was terrified - we finally gave up and came home in time to hear Gov. Cuomo declare a state of emergency in my county. The snow seems about 3’ high here and it just stopped. I am taking a personal day tomorrow if my office is open - I am not going outside until Monday.
@thumper, here in Phoenix today I have on shorts and flip flops. Glad he made it back.
Here on the South Shore of Long Island it has stopped snowing but what a storm. Never ventured out but just looking at we had white out conditions, probably close to 10 inches of snow but the wind driven snow has made for interesting drifts. My deck off my kitchen looks like a line was drawn down the middle, as all the snow blew from one side to the other. Worked remotely from home and looks like I will do the same tomorrow.
In 1978, I was newly married and living in Brooklyn Heights, very narrow streets so no snow plows ever made it down those streets. There were actually back to back huge storms. DH did not move his car for about a month and when he finally dug out, he had been parked by a hydrant. He worked at JFK and so had to take the subway out to Bensonhurst and one of his staff who drove from Staten Island would get off the highway and pick him up and drop him back at the end of the day.
“probably close to 10 inches of snow but the wind driven snow has made for interesting drifts”
Same here! Hard to pinpoint exactly how much we have but at least 10 inches which is on the high side/above forecasted amount. The wind has picked up and the snowfall has gotten icier.
