Since I just recieved my invitation to Echols, I wanted to ask about the housing. Since I know that those put in Echols are required to live with only the other Echols scholars, I was wondering if any current students could give me some insight into how they feel about this. Do you feel cut off from the rest of the students? Or is the housing a non-issue.
Thanks guys, any input appreciated!

I’m a Rodman, but the first year housing is the same. I thought it was great! The honors dorms are in the same location as regular dorms, but a couple of the buildings are designated honors. I really enjoyed the community aspect of living with all scholars, and it doesn’t feel cutoff at all, since you’re right with everyone else. Plus the honors dorms are the closest to the dining hall :D

Closest to the dining hall… THAT is the real hook! ;)

but Hereford is closer to Runk!! ;)

(and farthest from everything else…but still. I actually like it.)

Thanks Rodman!
So you never feel like you’re not part of the whole student body? That’s just something I’m worried about. I sort of wish I could opt-out of living in Echols housing.

What dorms are the Echols dorms?

it’s in Old Dorms (McCormick)

No, the Echols scholars live in Webb and Maupin, which are New Dorms (Alderman). There is a dorm in Old Dorms named Echols, but Echols scholars do not live here.

There are scholars living this year in Webb, Maupin, and Lile. They’re buildings I, G, and F on this map: [Carl Smith Center & Alderman Road, Web Map, U.Va.](ArcGIS Web Application)

The map doesn’t show Kellogg, which is behind Maupin and Lile. There are also new dorm buildings being constructed behind Webb.

Whoa really?? Haha I never even realized that the dorm called echols wasn’t the echols dorm lol. Oops sorry!

My daughter is interested in joining a sorority. How many Echols kids are in the frat/sorority scene?

From my experience, the percentage of Echols kids joining Greek organizations is about the same as the overall UVa percentage who join.

I’m going to join a sorority for sure! And I’ll be Echols. If that helps you.

curiousmother - i know several third years who are all echols scholars, and most of them are involved in greek life

Do Echols scholars live on campus all four years or are they forced off campus for the last year or two?

The Echols dorms are for first year only. After that, you have the same options as all other students. Check the housing section of the website.

I heard that the current Echols/Rodman dorms were being torn down sometime in the near future. Does anyone know when exactly they will be torn down, and where Echols and Rodmans will live after they are torn down.

i know this is not relevant to the thread but did everyone get an echols invitation in the mail as well? i only got my email invitation so far.

I have only gotten the Echols invitation by email as well. It makes me a little bit nervous!

I’ve only gotten email notification as well. Didn’t they say that they were going to send out letters by mail as well?
