ED > RD Rollover @ Williams

Hi, my kiddo is planning on applying to Williams as ED.
Our question is, if he is denied, will he roll over to the RD pool automatically?

What he has understood that he will only roll over to RD if he is deferred. Is that correct?

If so, are all EDs not accepted automatically deferred, or are there some who will not roll over?

I can’t speak specifically for Williams, but an ED applicant can be rejected outright. The application does not automatically roll over to RD as a deferment.

There are three possible outcomes for Williams ED applicants: accepted, denied, or deferred to the RD round. If a student’s app is denied, they are done and won’t be reevaluated in the RD round.

Here are ED results for Class of 2029:

The College admitted 257 out of 964 early decision applicants to the Class of 2029 on Dec. 13, an acceptance rate of 26.6 percent. The College also welcomed 18 students through QuestBridge’s National College Match program on Dec. 2.

The College deferred 129 applicants and denied admission to 572. Typically, the College admits a “small number” of deferred early decision candidates through the regular decision round, Dean of Admission and Student Financial Services Liz Creighton ’01 told the Record. Last year, the College admitted 14 applicants who had previously been deferred.
