Edinburgh Admission Requirements Help

Hello, I’m planning on applying to the University of Edinburgh but I’m concerned about my chances of getting in.

First of all, I want to study either Celtic and German or German and Russian. My overall goal is to become fluent in as many languages as possible. The admissions department told me that I should have AP tests/SAT Subject Tests in Celtic, German, and/or Russian. However, my school does not offer classes in those subjects let alone tests. Also, I don’t believe there is a Celtic subject test or AP test. I do have high enough AP and Subject tests in English Language and Composition and French Language and Composition. Would those work since they’re also languages?

My final question is their other requirement, a successfully completed year at University. I am a dual enrollment student. Basically this means that I am enrolled as a student at a University in my state and am taking classes that count towards both high school and University credits. When I emailed asking if this would count as a successfully completed year at University, their response was: “We would not able to consider your University level study taken alongside your final year of high school as meeting the requirement for a successful completion of one year of University in the USA –this requirement seeks to ensure that an applicant has achieved one year’s worth of university level credit within this time period, which is not normally the case where study has been taken alongside high school qualifications.”
However, I will have achieved one year’s worth of university level credit since I am enrolled officially as a student.
So, do you think I qualify and if so how should I go about explaining this?

Thank you

Welcome to UK admissions

To clarify, you do know that you do not have to have successfully completed a year of university to be admitted, right? it’s either APs/Subject tests OR a year of university.

Either one requires you to have taken the pre-reqs for the course you are applying to study. Either Celtic + German or German + Russian requires an AP/subject test in at least one of the languages. This is not a random thing: it is their way being sure that you are able for the course. It means that every single student who starts either C + G or G + R has a strong base in one of the two languages; most (but not all) will be starting the second language. Imagine walking into the first day of Russian, where you don’t even know the alphabet and everybody else already has at least a 4+ the AP (or 650+) of that language (moreover, realistically, the A-level equivalent is more rigorous on the written end, so the AP/subject test would still put you starting on the back foot). Truly, it is for your own benefit that the rule exits.

If you have strong French you should go for French + one of German / Russian / Portuguese / Italian / Spanish.

And no, dual-enrollment won’t count as a year of college.

You will not be allowed to start 2 languages from scratch. Look over joint honors degrees with French, and see if any are of interest to you and which ones you meet admission requirement for with your AP/SAT results.
