Effects of getting a D in math (CSE Major.)

Hi,

Sadly, after getting A’s and B’s throughout high school, I sadly got a D+ in pre-calculus.

I was accepted and schedule to go to UC IRvine, and they said that if i got a d or an F, I was to write a letter to them immediately explaining why.

What’s going to happen now?

Thanks.

Write them a letter immediately. I don’t know what will happen, but coming clean and telling them right away instead of waiting for them to find out from your transcript will be better than not.

And, chill :)

You’re still amazing.

The thing that would concern me is why you got the D. If calc in high school was truly difficult for you, you will have a very hard time in a math-based major, especially at a UC. The UCs have little tutoring available and very little counseling. They also have a very unforgiving curve.

Step back and think about whether you are playing on your strengths and whether this is what you really want to study.

Ya,

I’ll do that immediately, however, Computer Science IS what I want to study. The reason I got the D, honestly, is that I slacked off. I had to study for an AP English and AP Spanish final, and on top of that, built and designed a rocket-car for honors Physics (which was mostly just MATH, the car itself wasn’t graded, only the data and statistics we gathered and did the math related to it for.)

I’ll take your advice and write them a letter immediately.

Thank you for all your help!

can you retake in summer, or take at a jc? If so, put that in the letter…

I probably won’t be able to, i think it’s too late for registration, plus, I have an internship lined up with Intel that i’d like to pursue. I’ll add it to the letter.

The UC’s usually won’t rescind your admissions offer totally IF you have already met the minimum a-g requirements without the class you got the D in. (Three years of math is the minimum). If you don’t have 3 years, you will HAVE to make up the math credit for the course.
Do not wait to contact them - do so now, before they receive your final transcript.

Tell them that you were overloaded at the time and u’ll never do it again.
they prob. wont expell you… its too much of a hassle for them

IMO you should not be concerned with AP English or AP Spanish if you are CompSci. (at least not enough so that it cuts into your Pre Calc grade. A low exam score in AP Eng or AP espana isn’t going to hurt as much as a drop in PreCalc) Explain what happened and how you learned from this, etc.
