El Camino College Teacher Recommendations

hey can I still register for classes online even if i dont have a registration appointment

don’t think so…go to the counseling office and ask them

@Leuzinger2010

no you cannot. you have to apply to the school, get a registration appointment time and on that time (or anytime after) you may register for classes.

important question: do I have to complete all major and IGETC pre-reqs before transferring to UCLA or Cal to even have a shot at being accepted?

@Mikey

You can apply without finishing all major prereqs but I have heard more than two missing is auto-reject. They say IGETC completion isn’t required but it pretty much is.

Moral of the story: Get those done-- or as much as possible. If you don’t, you’ll look less competitive compared to those who have.

what courses should I take first semester if I have no idea what I want to major in but would still satisfy the prereqs for any major that I do decide to take.

[Counseling Services @ El Camino College](http://www.elcamino.edu/studentservices/co/transferreq.asp)

Click on a major you are interested in, or click on IGETC (General Education classes).

The PDF’s will tell you exactly what you need to take in order to transfer to a certain institution.

Where may I ask do you plan on transferring to?

is english 1A honors really that much harder than regular???

UCLA,UCSB,UCB,USC and maybe CSULB

@ Leuzinger

Look into TAG for UCSB which is a program that guarantees you admission there after completing certain requirements.

Check each school’s website to see prerequisites needed for each major. For example, life science majors at UCLA: [Transfer Major Prep - Life Science majors - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/lsmajors/life_sci.htm)

They need one year bio with lab, one year General Chemistry with lab, One year calculus, and one semester of Organic Chemistry.

I just found out all the classes I wanted are FULL. Can/ ShouldI register for other classes and still wait-list for the original classes I picked?? i’m bummed:(

@ Mikey

search for other classes just in case. By now, it’s very unlikely to find any classes you need open. You’re just going to have to be on the wait list and wait it out. If you’re not registered by the start of the semester, go to the first day of class and the professor will decide whether he or she will add any students. Most of the time, they add people on the wait list first depending on any open spots. Classes with labs are extremely hard to try to add mainly because of the budget cuts.

Hey can I still make it to UCLA if I only take math 180(pre-calculus)

What is your major?

Im undecided right now but Im not gonna major in math.

That’s kind of a tough one. All you need is Math 180 in order to fulfill the math requirement in the IGETC. So I would say you can transfer with only taking that as long as you don’t go into a major that requires any math beyond that. I would check with a counselor to make sure though. If you decide you later want to go into a major that requires you to take calculus later down in the road, it could delay your planned transfer year. So it wouldn’t hurt to take Calculus (Math 190 or Math 160) if you’re leaning more toward science or math.

Anyone in MESA at elco? what is it?

You guys have been very helpful on this forum. Mikey umm I think mesa is more focused on the math and science majors who plan on transferring. Hey i was woundering if biology 101 is the same as biology 10 and if history 101 and 102 are the same as history 1A and History 1B. For my first semester I plan on taking Eng 1A honors, Art 1, Anthropology 2, and maybe spanish 1 but I thought foreign langauge was only a requirement for csu. I dont wanna take math or any biological/physical science this semester cus all the good professors are taken. Is this good for first semester if I’m trying to apply to the UCs.

Bio 10 and Bio 101 are not the same. Bio 101 is the class generally for Biology majors-- much harder than Bio 10. History 101 and 102 are History 1A and 1B. They changed the name this semester for some reason. Your schedule looks good for a first semester. Are you registered for those classes? Or are you just planning on it? The language requirement is for UC’s too. You don’t have to take spanish if you already took two years worth of a foreign language in high school and passed them with a C or better.

@ Mikey,
I saw a Math 191 class open but it is Friday/Saturday class. I don’t know if that’s any help to you.

@uclaplease
ahah I’m registered for it… not the ideal instructor, but it was open:) I’m waitlisted for 5 classes lol
