I didn’t see it coming! Perhaps the “circumcision” thread was the last straw. If so, I regret any part I played in it which may have helped bring about its demise.

I was all ready to respond to cartera, again, but found the forum closed! …

It was skeery YDS! I seriously don’t know ANY people like many of the posters there. It was very interesting to actually read the beliefs of the ultra-libs. Most people in my life have VERY different views from the people in that forum.

Now I’ll have to stick to the “dressing young” thread to see how the “other half” live (“other half” in this thread being people with WAY more disposable income than I have). :-)

A true shame. There were many and varying opinions on there, and if treated in the right context as most did (as a place to civilly discuss the hot topics of the day, and perhaps learn a little in the process), it actually served a useful purpose. In fact, it WAS one of the few places on the internet where folks from all ends of the political spectrum were welcome to contribute. An echo chamber it wasn’t!

And if you think the atmoshere there was “un-civil”, try participating in other political forums on other sites. Nasty, crude, and sophomoric doesn’t begin to describe. All in all, the politcal forums here WERE pretty civil.

I say good riddance. There were a bunch of posters who lived totally on the politics forum. Never contributed anything except to push their own partisan agenda and smirk in triumph over the failings of the other side. For them and the rest of us, CC can now go back to being a college forum again.

The (questionable) assertion that it didn’t stink quite as bad as some other on-line political cesspits doesn’t mean that it was actually the welcoming, friendly place that CC aspires to be. It was the worst, most venomous forum on CC, which is why I quit reading it.

I do have to confess that I ended up unsubscribing to every thread I ever started over there…eventually, no matter what the topic, the discussion would devolve into something I no longer wanted to read.

What a shame. Although it did occasionally get out of hand, it had some great discussions and I learned a lot. I guess I won’t be spending as much time here as I used to. My kids are all grown and I’m here just for the great discussions now.

I thought it was horrible and the snarkiness from the political forum tended to carry over onto the main boards. I’m glad it’s gone. I stayed clear.

If anything I ever said, either on that forum or privately to the moderators (or anything that was said to me), had even the tiniest influence on the decision, then I would actually be quite pleased. The Augean Stables definitely needed cleaning. Yes, there were some wonderful discussions there. And, yes, even at its worst it was far better than most political forums. And I do very much respect a number (but not all!) of the regular posters there who hold different political views from my own.

But closing the forum is for the best if it means I never again have to see – or feel obligated to respond – to posts saying truly awful things about people like me, or people like my son. Even though such posts were the exception, not the rule, dealing with that stuff on this website was not what I had in mind when I joined CC, and was not at all good for me, emotionally or otherwise. People may think I was too intense or contentious about those issues, but please keep in mind that I almost never brought up LGBT issues myself; 99% of what I said on the subject was reactive to comments made by others. I am as protective of my son as any of you, and, for the most part, that’s how I saw what I was doing.

And now I don’t have to anymore. That’s a good thing.

I can see it coming with one side bashing another at any hint that another side might have a different opinion. I read complaints about ridiculous one-sided opinions on whole CC in regard to political views which reflects one-sided opinion in whole education system and goes along with status of NPR and other media. I cannot think of politically correct statements that eventually got very monotonous as “great discussions”. I wish they were.

This was discussed in the California instate tuition for illegals thread last night, but all of the posts discussing the closing of the pol forum were deleted :(

I totally, TOTALLY agree with the decision to close that forum. This is an education site, not a political forum. There seem to have been many posters who posted nowhere else on CC but there, and IMO, thats not what this site is all about. IMO, the general tone of CC changed after that forum opened, and I agree with MOWC (as I had said last night) that the friction that was allowed to develop over there, where many posters at times took rather intense swaks at each other under the guise of an intellectual discussion, bled over into other forums/discussions here. The hostility and tension has no place here. Lively, active, amusing, witty and interesting discussions are great. Entertaining and clever posts are enjoyable too. But the conflict and hostility that brewed that often seemed unchecked was just, well, distasteful.

Hopefully the clever banter will remain here on the education forums and the snarky meter will dial down. Sayonara, Pol forum. At times it was a fun ride.
