i read it about it on CNN and looked at their yescalifornia.org website. their plan ultimately hinges on getting 38 states to approve the measure. yeah i do not see that happening.
I just saw that 43.4% of eligible voters didn’t vote. This is a discouraging number. It reflects how many feel that their vote doesn’t matter. In my opinion it also contributes to the vitriol we see in campaigns. Anger and fear are tools used to get people to the polls and vote.
I get it, so for goodness sake, shorten the campaign season!
Unless you are in a battleground state, an individuals vote does not truly matter at least for most of the higher offices. And that skews the popular vote numbers.
In San Diego county, 87.3% of registered voters voted, highest county in the state by far. National results weren’t at issue in California (although it affected the popular vote, of course) but there were a ton of state and local measures. I’m impressed with my fellow citizens.
Re: Calexit. The eastern counties are mostly red. And that’s where all the water comes from. If the western areas voted to secede, they would be very thirsty.
There are a lot of defense contractors in CA (at least in the LA county)…that (Calexit) would be a problem…
No state is going to secede. I just don’t want any non progressives to move into my state. Fortunately, it’s New York so zero chance of that.
It’s interesting. California, Texas, Vermont, and Hawaii were all independent at one time. They all joined the union, except for Hawaii which was basically stolen. I wonder if there have been occasional rumblings about secession from these states more than from the others. I remember towns in Vermont voting to secede during the 80s.
California by itself has a larger economy than France. If push comes to shove, the governor might just refuse to enact or honor some federal dictate that would offend the state’s residents. And then what? We live in “interesting” times.
Then the federal government sends in the national guard as in the Little Rock school situation in the 50’s.
We need peace and unity. I understand that the protesters want to blow off a little steam and vent their disappointment. But what are they protesting? That they don’t like the outcome of a democratic election?
I was thinking more of a scenario like Montana and speed limits. They dutifully put up their speed limit signs on the highway, to appease the feds, and then the governor instructs the state troopers to never enforce them. I could see California doing that with social issues.
There is also a petition going around on Facebook to reject the electoral college outcome and go with popular vote. Some were commenting that it would start a civil war, to which, others commented to the effect “so we know which side would have all the guns…”
:))
