electric school buses

Interesting news. Virginia is buying some electric school buses. They are very expensive but in the long run will save both fuel and stop pollution both inside and outside the bus! I am happy with this news. Do your states use electric school buses.
I personally drive a Chevy Volt. I’m all for electric vehicles.

School buses in urban or suburban areas which make typical school commute trips and trips within the local area for various purposes (sports games, field trips, etc.) are obvious electric vehicle applications, since they spend a lot of time in city driving (where electric vehicles can recover some energy during braking) and have predictable parked time at night for recharging. Eliminating the exhaust fumes around the bus and school is another benefit. Garbage trucks are another application with similar characteristics.

Charging from a coal powered grid may not be all that great from a CO2 standpoint. But Virginia has a below average percentage of electricity from coal (20.7%), with the biggest shares from nuclear and natural gas (each 36.5%).
