Electrical Engineering Department Opinions?

For those who have taken EE classes with CPSLO, how good is the department? I was looking at comments on Reddit and it seems quite a lot of folks there feel that the EE classes and professors are really disorganized and not teaching crucial foundational skills for the major.

@eyemgh - can you provide any feedback about EE?

to OP, you might look up faculty names on the course schedule and look at rate my professor listings - vs. reddit.

That said, at most schools, you’ll find hit or miss profs.

Good luck.

I can’t speak for EE per se. My son majored in ME with a concentration in mechatronics, so he had some EE and CS, but those courses are taught through the ME department. He said those were very good.

The only true EE class he took was a graduate level class, 509 Computational Intelligence. I think he liked it because the material was interesting (see below), but I remember him remarking that the instructor wasn’t great.

Theory, design, and applications of biologically inspired computational paradigms, including artificial neural networks, evolutionary computation, swarm intelligence, and hybrid intelligent systems.

FWIW, I don’t think Reddit is a good source of information. My daughter always said that the harder the class, the more complaints. EE classes are challenging so I’m not surprised that students are quick to blame the professors instead of their own study skills.

I agree tha rate my professor, that is somewhat more accurate.

In my experience…the folks who post most on Rate My Professor are ones who did NOT like a professor. You seldom get both sides. View with caution.

I think RMP is valuable for giving insight into what is required in a class. For example, my oldest didn’t like to write, and found RMP helpful when students said things like “final exam is a 30 page paper.” :grimacing:

My son had weekly 100 page assignments in Fluid Dynamics 2, essentially all math. That professor got derided on RMP, but my son said he was the best teacher he’d ever had. He asked him onto his thesis committee. He worked students hard, but my son said that no one out worked the professor. He produced better engineers for it.
