Does anyone know percentage of Fellows actually awarded out of candidates invited to the weekend on campus? Considering the cost which for us would include missed classes one day, flight, hotel, and getting two days of work off (weekend job). Is it a final check to make sure these kids are sane or is it a long shot for everyone? Trying to determine potential ROI here. Thx
I donât know if its the same for Fellows, but for the accelerated PT program (which has interviews on 3/1) you had to submit your request for a virtual interview by EOD today (Friday). Iâm assuming they will consider all the requests at once.
I saw last year that 762 students showed up for in person and 300 virtual for I believe overall 225 spots. Some take 30, some 45 and some 60 students
Am I alone in thinking this is a pretty big ask from the college? This is my first rodeo and Iâm discovering my own naivete by the day (read: totally disillusioned by the process). Letâs just ballpark the trip requiring a flight for student and one parent. Itâs easily a $1000 weekend. 1100 students with a 1 in 4 chance. So 3 in 4 go home having paid the expenses of travel and not offsetting it with a scholarship. Would you pay your own way to fly for a job interview?
Not a final check - only 30-60 awarded per area, and about 4x that many brought in.
This was all spelled out in the application process and info sessions about Elonâs scholarships. I am surprised by the number of people (parents/students) who had no idea there was an interview process or that itâs super competitive and that itâs in person. When a child submits the application (or actually, before starting it), it lets them know the date of the interview weekend and the number of fellows given out. There were webinars and info posted too.
Iâm sad for all the kids who really wanted an interview and would have attended compared to the dozens of people Iâve seen who had no idea this was the process and are now not going.
My child was offered a fellows spot but when we went to the weekend we parents thought it was a good way to learn more about the school, meet professors and students (fellows and non-fellows) and figure out whether this school would be a good fit - with or without the fellows program. They offered a video interview for people who couldnât make the trip.
Itâs a good way to gauge who really wants to go there. We definitely wouldâve gone to the weekend if it was still in the running for my daughter. The only issue is that with most Accelerated PA programs, theyâve already selected their class for 2024 as theyâre extremely competitive. Elon is coming in late, compared to the few schools that have this route, and with most of the others, they did interviews late last year, provided acceptances in December or January, and you need to commit prior to May 1. So my daughter definitely wouldâve gone to the weekend if she didnât have other options. But at this point she feels like sheâs been through the wringer and canât handle another interview. I canât blame her!
Not to mention attending school a flight away is an ongoing expense - especially at a school like Elon that has J termâŠalong with storing stuff for the summer, the requirement to study abroadâŠElon is $$$$ for various reasons outside what you may think of when applying.
Reading the fine print and not leaving everything to your student is key.
I agree, the virtual option for be there for everyone. We are still waiting for my son to decide if he Elon is truly in the running. With this and the President scholarship it definitely puts it below tuition wise a number of schools he is consideringâŠtough call
This is Elonâs way of seeing who is serious about coming - otherwise every high stats kid that is trying to get 20 offers will do it, and then most will turn them down later, leaving them scrambling. They want to know who really wants this specialized opportunity and is passionate about it.
Most students stay on campus for J term and studying abroad is optional
JTerm is included in the fall tuition. And yes, those who are going to school that far away will be factoring in travel expenses. I think Elon knows that some kids will apply for every little thing and arenât serious about the school and want to see who is. Also, in person events are so much more telling. having a kid on campus for 2 days is going to give more info than a zoom interview.
Elon is $25k less than many private schools, so these other scholarships are much less of a given than at some schools.
Looks like theyâve opened up the virtual interview slots for fellows interviews. Have you kid keep an eye on their email.
D24 was just awarded a Presidential Scholarship after being accepted EA. So it does look like merit will come after initial acceptance letter. Still waiting on financial aid to determine if this will work for us.
DD24 just got the Presidential Scholarship.
Congrats to your daughters!
My D23 also got the Presidential Scholarship last year, but it came with her acceptance letter, so they are definitely changing things up this year.
Sounds like multiple kids got notice today of the $10k presidential scholarship. Did your daughter pull her app?
Thanks! I got the feeling she received it because she never replied to the invitation for the scholarship weekend. But who knowsâŠ
Did those recently receiving the Presidential Scholarship also receive any money in their initial acceptance letter?
No. I think they might be holding off giving scholarship money to people who are possibly attending the interview weekend.
