Emailing admissions about grade drops [admitted ED, mostly B grades this semester]

Hey guys! So I was recently accepted into Dartmouth early decision, but recently I’ve been concerned about my grades as they have fallen to mostly Bs this semester. I emailed admissions because I could not stop panicking about it, and this is what they replied. I’m just curious if we think his response and that him putting it in my file is a good thing or bad thing :sob: (if you can’t, tell I’m paranoid :skull:) thanks!!! E

You’re likely fine with Bs. A bunch of Cs would be a problem, a D or an F would be a big problem. The note in your file probably doesn’t really mean anything, so I wouldn’t worry about it. Focus on getting your grades back to where you want them.

Colleges do not see your final grades until summer. I wouldn’t worry about it, but I certainly would never have emailed admissions about the matter. Did you ask any adult in your life about sending the email before you actually did it? There are literally dozens, if not hundreds, of threads on Reddit about final grades and their impact.

I emailed the coordinator of native/indigenous outreach because I received an email from him welcoming me to Dartmouth and saying to use him as a resource if I have any questions or concerns. I asked my dad before and he didn’t think it was a bad idea, but now seeing this maybe I shouldn’t have, I’m worried

A neutral thing.

What you need to do now is relax over the holidays. Once school restarts don’t fall into the senioritis trap. Assuming you don’t get a D or multiple C’s, you’ll be fine. And con

Its all fine, no one raises eyebrows about B’s. And since you were given a specific contact I understand you sending the email. Don’t worry about it and just maintain the A’s and B’s through the end of the school year.

But what about the email, I’m scared now was that a bad move and are they going to have an issue with it? Sorry I’m just really stressed

Please, stop worrying. Even if you got straight B’s all of senior year, they would be very unlikely to rescind your acceptance. Try to forget that you sent that email - Dartmouth isn’t paying any attention to it. Focus on doing your best while also enjoying your senior year, and be happy that you got into your first choice school!

Even one C would probably not be a problem. If your grades were to drop lower than that - multiple C’s might be a problem (probably not, although an explanation might be warranted). D’s and F’s, would be a problem. But a B, or two, or three, is not the end of the world. Just do your best, and try not to worry about this.

If you cannot let go of the worrying, maybe this would be a good time to get some counseling on stress management techniques, before you go off to college. Some B grades should not be causing you this much stress at this point. I’m concerned that college application stress has become a self-fueling cycle for you that you need to break out of, so that you can enjoy senior year and start college refreshed.

Okay thank you, I’ll try to relax

I wouldn’t worry about this.

Don’t let your grades drop further, and with college apps behind you and “found time”, try to bring them back up.

It’s neither good nor bad but he is telling you that what you are worried about generally has NOT resulted in a rescinded admission.

Just do the best you can going forward.

Also it is totally normal to freak out, but this is not because res

Okay thank you. What does ‘Res ’ mean

Wait maybe the whole reply just isn’t loading and it cut off lol

It’s a very nice, reassuring email from Dartmouth. They are not singling you out. They will review every enrolling student’s final high school transcript — it’s standard procedure. The B’s will not put your admission at risk, just try to keep your grades solid.

First of all, congratulations on your acceptance - celebrate and be kind to yourself!

Writing your contact about your grade drop shows maturity and you proactively reaching out shows you are being upfront and honest.

I agree with others that the AO’s note was not negative at all and adding it to your file is a good thing - showing you care and are taking responsibility for your performance.

Enjoy the holiday break and return to high school prepared to finish strong. Again, congrats on your admission to Dartmouth!

Thank you so much! I’m feeling a lot better about the situation! I’m going to try and just enjoy the rest of my senior year without worrying! Happy holidays 🫶🏽🫶🏽

You will not be the only student worried about rescission based on colleges’ vague statements about maintaining your academic performance in in-progress courses.

Colleges can eliminate lots of these worries by posting their safe harbor criteria (e.g. “no schedule changes, no D or F grades, GPA in in-progress courses no lower than ___”) or including them in admission offers.

I agree with all the above but keep this in mind. Most schools especially highly selective ones look at senior year as your ability to get ready for college. No senoritis! Do the best you can to get ready for college and relax and have some fun your senior year.

I think the email reads that you’ll be fine. They literally say a few high Bs will not be a problem. They probably can’t legally say it definitively.
