Does anyone know when is the end of the 1st wave? and the start of the 2nd wave?

also, If you’re a priority student, and you don’t get your acceptance in the 1st wave, would this mean that you’re rejected?

thanks

I don’t know.

What do you mean by “priority student”?

oh, i meant if you applied by the priority deadline. dec 1st.

There are thousands of students who applied by the Dec 1st deadline. Only a percentage of those are invited to interview for the two merit scholarships. If one is not invited (did not get an acceptance in this first wave, or possibly in the next one), it certainly does not mean a rejection.

oh ok thanks

And don’t forget, students who applied by the 1st can still get the Dean’s (quarter tuition for 4 years), which does not require an interview.

hmm, are Dean’s scholarship candidates part of the small pool of ppl that have been getting fluctuating status message changes lately?

or are they still un-notified of any big changes regarding their application status?

^ it’s possible (first sentence), since the Dean’s recipients will probably receive their acceptances after the first and second lot.

That doesn’t really make sense though, because there have been a handful of people who did the “trick” and found no mention of a scholarship, yet were accepted in the first wave. The waves might have nothing to do with scholarships. Unless, perhaps, the individuals with no scholarship are actually future Dean’s scholarship recipients. I dunno.

I think it might be possible that early admits who are not receiving an invitation for Pres or Trustee may have been in the candidates’ pool. Because the departments can only select a certain number, perhaps they just weren’t chosen. Because they are already accepted, and are among the top applications, AdCom probably went ahead and sent the acceptances.
I think it’s very likely that these will get a Deans.

My son received his admission letter last week & just checked the “RSVP for admitted students programs” and there was no indication of a “personal” letter or of a scholarship, even though he is a NM finalist, more than likely. So either he looked in the wrong spot, or they don’t expect NM people to interview, or he just didn’t get a scholarship. Not giving up hope yet!

what if you’re a national merit semifinalist and you didn’t get an acceptance yet? does that mean you won’t get the scholarship? sorry…kinda paranoid here…

flloyd, If you are accepted and you are an NMF and name USC as your top choice, you will get a Presidential half tuition, regardless of when you are accepted between now and end March.

My son picked USC as his first choice on the NM form. When does USC find out from NM if he has been chosen as a finalist? Seems like USC wouldn’t offer him a scholarship until they got the news from the NM people. Maybe that’s why he’s already been admitted but no news of a scholarship?

mom483, for NMF the Presidential is automatic. NMFs have until May 1 to make USC their #1 selection. After USC is notified, they send the student a letter confirming they received their name on the official list and outlining the details of their scholarships.

The current merit scholarship interview invitations (Trustee & Presidential) that are coming out are competitive and require attendance at Explore USC plus an interview. Even though there may be some crossover (some NMSFs will certainly be in the pool), USC doesn’t have any way to know who will be finalists (although most do go on to be named NMF), so they select their own scholars independent of that outcome. Meantime, one student can only be awarded one merit scholarship by USC (although they certainly can accept other outside awards), so in essence, a invitation-to-Explore Presidential is almost equal to an automatic NMF Presidential–with the addition for the NMF of $1000/year.

It’s possible that your S is up for a Dean’s scholarship (no interview required) which would be overridden by a NMF Presidential, if he is named NMF in the coming months. It is also possible that the website is not completely accurate so time will tell. Best of luck.

Thanks for explaining that, madbean. Now we just have to wait for the news from NM.

madbean you are full of great knowledge about the USC process so maybe you can help here… my sister got an acceptance package last week. She went on the “Explore USC” site and there was no mention of an invitation for a scholarship. So, does that mean that she was in a pool of applicants that looked good but they decided not to offer her an invitation to interview. She is NOT a NMF. Do you think everyone who got their packages this past week were in one wave and that they will all get either Trustee, Pres. or Dean’s? Finally, does everyone who is getting an invitation get an email AFTER the package arrived saying “…look for a letter in the mail…” Seems lots of people got these. She did not get one…yet…

chattykathy, i’m in the same situation. i got my acceptance in the first wave, but the explore usc didn’t say anything about a scholarship. is it possible that they simply didn’t finish sending out scholarship notices for everyone and updating the system with this information?

i mean, people from last year said that it took up to a week to get them. it hasn’t even been half a week yet, not to mention that they probably don’t work on weekends. i’m just trying to be optomistic!! can anyone give me some hope?

handlebars make sure to post if you do get a scholarship letter. I think those who got invitations got a status that was something like “…a decision has been made…be looking for a letter in the mail…” My sister did not get that status change.

In the same situation as Handlebars.
