Engineering/Enviro Sci Double Major?

I’ve thought about double majoring in Civil Engineering and Environmental Science, I’m not sure exactly what I want to do, but would it be near-suicidal insanity to double major in the two?

Also, How “environmental” can you get with the Civil/Environmental Engineering program?

You should not plan to double major if you are in the engineering school. This looks promising: http://www.seas.virginia.edu/about/brochures/pdf/cee_brochure.pdf</a> So does this [Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program](http://ce.virginia.edu/undergraduate/) you can just do a concentration in environmental or otherwise (water resources sounds pretty green…)

E-school is really, really darn difficult to double major in. The Civil/EnvEng program is really, really gaining speed. There’s all sorts of green engineering programs going on, they did a case study of the new LEED certified engineering building, and a ton of money is getting poured into the EnvironmentalE side of CivilE. You can take EnviSci classes as electives and I doubt it would be difficult to minor in EnviSci (look for classes that duel-qualify; you can fill a tech or unrestricted elective with an EnviSci class or take a EnviSci geared STS class). If I did engineering again, I’d probably go that route. Green engineering has to, and will, become the dominate concern in our lifetime. It’s devastating to think about the amount of damage modern engineering has done to the world. With LEED-buildings, green spaces, and sustainable construction becoming popular, you’re in a good field. That said, UVa is working its butt off to “go green”.

Go tour the engineering school. I think you’ll like what you see in terms of the environmental side. Also feel free to either email the dean, front office ladies, or faculty in the CivilE dept. All of the above would be happy to answer any questions :)

all civils ever talked about in STS was LEED certification. I got sick of that topic real fast, but it looks like environmental concerns are really starting to be addressed.

If I’ve been told correctly, UVa’s actively going after a LEED platinum rating for the new e-school building and possibly others. Not sure how I feel about the marginal costs for that, but it’s clearly an important issue to them.

Yeah Rice Hall will be super-LEED-happy. I’m not sure the ratings, but it’s at the top. Almost entirely alumni-supported as well, which is why there was a demand for the hot food cafe! Woot! I meant to go by when I was down there a couple of weeks ago, all I really ever knew of it was a giant, giant hole and then a more giant hole with some ironwork coming out of it :p
