I am an English major transfer student. However, I would like to either double major or minor in drama as well. I have already applied to UC Berkeley, UCLA and UC San Diego. Next I will have to apply to private schools and am trying to narrow down which to apply to.
My question is: What are the top private schools known for their English AND Drama programs???

The ones that I came across with good programs are:
Cornell (English & Drama)
John Hopkins (English & Drama)
Brown (English & Drama)
USC (Drama Program)
Loyola Marymount University (English Program)
Yale (English & Drama)

I appreciate any feedback and comments!! Thank you

When you say drama, do you mean acting? Some programs emphasize the academic study of theatre, while others emphasize performance more.

If you are interested in performance, then find schools whose curricula include many performance courses. Probably the best ones for that on the list above would be Brown and USC. I’m also certain that there would be others that meet your criteria but are not on your list.

We often ask the folks who want to do double majors, or a major and a minor, “Why?”

Maybe you have a very good reason, but I just want to make sure you have thought this through. Think about where you want to be in five years, ten years. What qualifications are you going to NEED to get there? Focus on getting those qualifications, and let the rest be your hobby. There is nothing wrong in having a hobby in addition to a career. And you don’t need a degree to have a hobby.

If you are hoping to have a career in drama, or some other area of entertainment, I think you need to devote yourself 100% to that goal. Because these are areas that are VERY competitive, and the people who succeed are the people who have devoted themselves 100%. A double major means you aren’t devoting yourself 100% to either of your majors.

Are you interested perhaps in becoming a playwright? There are some very good programs specifically in playwriting, which obviously combine “drama” with “English”.

THEREALKEVP, that is not universally true. My D did a double major and has been fortunate enough to work continuously since graduating over five years ago. She is not a unique case.

^^Absolutely, alwaysamom. Of my older D’s Kenyon drama classmates, most were double majors, and many of them are working in theater now; two are in highly competitive MFA programs (UT-Austin in playwriting and BU for directing) after double-majoring in American Studies and English, respectively. Many successful theater professionals did their undergrad degrees in different fields. Follow your interests and nurture your intellect! :)

Agree with alwaysamom and times3. My D will enter her program with 30+ hours of AP credit and most of her non theatre core courses covered. It will be very easy for her to both double major and take more specialty classes in stage management/design/dramaturgy.
