I am thinking about becoming an environmental science major at UVa. However, I have heard that most firms or just any job positions like to see a master’s degree rather than just a bachelor’s. But I really would just like to graduate and start working…any advice or information regarding this? Also, if anyone knows, how is the department here? Idk any environmental science majors myself.
It is a good idea for any young person to go on a site like monster.com and see what qualifications are being sought for various job openings. The goal is to try to match your education, summer jobs, internship, software skills, etc. to the types of qualifications that employers are looking for.
You might also check out whether UVa or other colleges offer a 5 years joint bachelors-masters program in your field of interest. Just be aware that if you are counting on AccessUVa aid, it is not available for the 5th year. Other alternatives may be available, such as a paid job in a department in the 5th year.
Also read the fine print. My son found out that a 5 year program was not as simple to complete in 5 years as it first appeared, even though he had AP credits.
