People always think their pet is adorable but it’s important to recognize our own filters. Where I see my calm, friendly, beautiful golden retriever someone else may see a mouth full of slobber and teeth. When my kids were little the local pediatric dentist had a pair of little white Malteses he would put in the children’s laps to distract and calm them while he worked on their teeth. My child was terrified of them. She loved big dogs but those little smelly ones scrabbling around on top of her did the exact opposite of calm her. It was bad enough that we had to switch practices.
I cannot imagine why a Maltese would be smelly.
^It was just normal elderly dog smell but propped right under the nose of an anxious 2 year old it was not pleasant. I have nothing against Malteses, but I imagine her experience was not unlike the experience of someone who doesn’t like dogs trapped on a cross-country flight seated next to someone’s “emotional support animal.”
A duck could never peck a person. Just look at their beaks! Nibble, at most. Daniel did not belong in a crate. It sounds like he brought joy to everyone who chose to interact with him, and didn’t impinge on anyone else.
Full disclosure: we had pet ducks as kids.
At our previous office there was a small lake (maybe big pond) our front as well as a table and chairs. When the Canadian geese came in we had to warn clients not to feed them or approach them. They were pretty aggressive.
Canadian Geese are mean. Ducks aren’t.
@Sue22 - we’ve had two Malteses. One had terribly smelly breath his whole life. When he went on a barking fit the room would start to smell, lol.
If a duck is seated next to me on a flight, I am gonna cry foul/fowl.
The name is Canada geese. They are almost like pests and a major annoyance here in my neck of the woods as they never leave in the summer. They are really mean and crap up every square inch of trails and parks… There is a reason I don’t like swimming in local lakes… I would not want to see an ESA Canada goose!
My little sister had a Maltese. The little chichi do with her chichi bow and pretty collar would not miss an opportunity to roll in roadkill…

ALMOST like pests? They have been an invasive species nearly everywhere we have lived in the last 40 years. Crapping all over public parks and intimidating people from Seattle to Dallas. (And probably farther, I just haven’t lived
Lol. In my books, they are pests. But the officials stop short of calling them what they really are, so no, extermination is not a (legal) option.
My Dad said they were rounding up the Canada geese in Seattle and feeding them to the homeless. Of course, he is a little crazy.
He used to bring an umbrella to Greenlake so he could chase the Canada geese away. I guess when you run at them while you’re opening and closing an umbrella, it freaks them out. However, bystanders were displeased.
“My Dad said they were rounding up the Canada geese in Seattle and feeding them to the homeless.”
That would be a win-win situation!
At least the Canada geese give swans an employment opportunity. The condo complex where my mom lived in the Chicago suburbs brought in a pair every spring to chase the geese away. Swans can be even meaner than geese! They nested and raised little cygnets every year and looked pretty from my mom’s window.
There were also businesses that used dogs - bring them around to clients and let them chase the geese away. Part of the proliferation of geese was due to retaining ponds constructed to control flooding, especially when they were incorporated into landscaping.
@Consolation, absolutely it was a temperamental issue. Post 680 wondered why if a dog wasn’t dangerous or in training, it shouldn’t be touched. I was responding more to that question.
I’ll add that I never would have taken this dog on a plane or anywhere that crowded. But we did go for walks and such, and there were people who didn’t respect my requests that the not pet her. So just in general, listen to people who tell you to leave the dog alone!
Ducks are mean to each other. Not to malign a whole species, but their #metoo stories would curl your hair. Or at least ruffle your feathers.
If you think your duck/cat/dog/turtle is cute, good for you. Others are allowed to disagree, and airlines should be allowed to require you to confine them so that they don’t threaten or intimidate other passengers.
Despite my adoration of Daniel the Duck, I have to agree with you, @MomofJandL , re crating.
@BunsenBurner ugh those geese drove me crazy! They crapped all over Ohio too. I hated going to soccer games because inevitably there was crap all over the fields and my daughter played rec soccer , fall and spring from 1st-12th grade.
We’re getting off topic but since it’s a problem (which I thankfully don’t have!)…
"And not only are the birds good to eat – they are also fun to hunt. Because of their flâneur-like loitering, a Canada Goose might seem an easy snatch, but it takes skill to nab one. … “If [the geese] were coming toward me, I’d do a soft, slow, rhythmic honking.Oct 19, 2011
