<p>Sanskrit was the only subject I had tution in 10th.And still I only scored a frickin’ 89.It was weird,my friends used to talk about math/sci tution…and I’d be mumbling about sanskrit.
However,I still love the ancient language.</p>

<p>Sad part is that due to lack of practice I am not able to speak freely. I can understand most of it and still remember the grammar - rules of termination for verbs and nouns/adjectives, sandhis etc,</p>
<p>BTW, sanskrit is taught throughout USA. I am not sure if you have heard about an organization called Samskirta Bharati. They have centers throughout the world where they teach conversational sanskrit. Unfortunately, I have not been able to make time to attend those classes. Some day …</p>
<p>How did you learn then?It must not have been easy,learning from books and the net.Much as I love the language,I must admit,the books are slightly discouraging.
Are you fluent in Hindi?</p>
<p>I can understand Hindi enough to enjoy movies. I am able to read and write devanagari script used for both sanskrit and Hindi.</p>
<p>Do you get to study classics by Kalidasa and Bhasa in your sanskrit class? I find their works very fascinatin from bits and pieces I have read. I thought what Bhasa did in Svapnavasavadatta was very masterful.</p>

<p>Tippu-we got to study various pieces of work,we did not focus on just one artist.However,Kalidasa did feature in the list of authors.A few of the times,the author’s name was not mentioned.My school teaches sanskrit only till 10th standard as like most other schools in my city.I had sanskrit for 5 years(the maximum).
Im sorry to say,I don’t recall if any of the pieces were by Bhasa.This is just another episode to prove how much ignorant Indians in India are of their own culture,while Indians abroad make every attempt they can to cling onto their identity.Now that I am applying abroad this year,I have begun to appreciate and take a lot more interest in our culture than ever before.</p>
<p>From personal observation, I’ve realized that most NRIs know much more about Indian culture than we Indian residents do!</p>

In British School/American Embassy school,mostly it is NRI’s,kids of foriegn diplomats studying and the NRI kids couldn’t give a damn about our culture.</p>
<p>That’s because they live IN India.</p>
