Evaluation of Indian school marks for MIT

@black - no. this is an indirect way to ask “which school are you from?”… lol :)

Man…I love us Indians.

@esconie On a serious note, I have got the same questions on Olympiads as Blackadder, their timing and whether it’s possible for us to notify Universities of our performance in NSEP/InPhO. Can you please answer these queries? And you had won some World Linguistic Olympiad as well, I read. Was that in XII and did MIT get to know of that in time? And did you also participate in RMO/INMO/IMO (Math olympiads)?

(I know we’re annoying the hell out of you but we really need some help regarding these queries)

Everyone’s behind her back! Good lord, guys! :P

Anriruddh, It is all your fault. You told the world …

Nooooo! You put up the link about her success at ipho…

Anyway, knowing her, I’m sure she’d be glad to answer everyone’s questions, so no issues :P

i didn’t spell it out like you did.

ani, r u done with ur SATs?

Alriiight. I don’t mind answering questions, BUT ground rules. Aniruddh - no putting up random info from my fb statuses on the internet (eg malaria) (also, lemme add that the only reason tippu knows who I am is cos u put it out there somewhere). Everyone else - no embarrassing posts, ok? Or I “run away from this forum and never come back” :P

So. Timeline -
NSEP
NSEP Results / Apply to MIT
InPhO
MIT mid yr report
InPhO Results / MIT admission decision
Physics OCSC (team selection)
IPhO
MIT!!!

Clear? The slashes mean they happen around the same time, in my yr both the MIT things happened first, but its variable…
Also, imo the only thing that really holds any weight is OCSC, and ur decision would usually be made by then, so conclusion —> olympiads can’t help you. Sorry :frowning:
IPhO was just a coupla weeks before I came here, so I didn’t tell them (if by them u mean the admissions office). The physics dept does know, cos I was trying to get out of some classes here.
Which brings me to 8.01. I’m not taking it, and Walter Lewin isn’t teaching it.
I did linguistics (IOL) in the 11th, so they Did know about that. I was in the physics, chem and astro OCSCs, but math? Haha never was good enough to get past INMO
Also - damn. I thought harsheena was a girl too! Its ok pixie, we can have our own girly club  (no harsheena, before you ask, im not lesbian. why do u seem to think everyone is?)

@esconie - no, it doesn’t seems to me that you are lesb. btw its not harsheena, its harisheena - an amalgamation of harish and ayeena (mirror)…

What is nsep?

national standard exam in physics

oh is that the prelim exam in india for physics?

in america, for bio olympiad, we have usabo (open exam), and then the semifinal exam in march, and then the top 20 scores in the semifinal exam gets to go on to the camp, and from the camp, they choose 4 kids to participate in IBO

yups. this exam is the only way to get selected for international physics olympiad from India

Blackadder, do not get so emotionally involved in any university. If you get rejected (I hope you don’t) and if you’re too emotionally invested, it’ll feel like a part of you died on reading the rejection letter.

@esconie Thanks a lot! That made many things clear. If you don’t mind, can you tell a bit about the books you referred for NSEP/InPhO/IPhO? So far I’ve done the IITJEE standard ones like HC Verma, Irodov, Resnick/Halliday/Walker and Arihant. What else is needed/recommended?

Oh, harisheena, sorry bout that, u can blame it on tryin to read/reply on my phone running between classes!

Some things I forgot to reply to - the courseload really depends on what you want, my own classes are ridiculously easy but it IS possible to pick really really hard ones. But almost everything offered here is harder than JEE prep, just fyi.
IROPs are usually continuations of UROPs (which are extremely easy to get even if you have zero experience).
Have I seen hacks? OH YEAH
About the food, there are hundreds of vegetarians here, its not really a problem. Punjabi dhaba is supposed to be one of the ‘better’ indian places, but I haven’t actually eaten there. However, I definitely, agree with blue_box on this one, its Not a good idea to get So attached to any one university. Seriously, MIT isn’t all there is out there!

Rohan- Irodov is all I did for physics. If you can handle that, you’re all set  good luck!

[Amazon.com: Problems in general physics (9785030008004): I. E Irodov: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Problems-general-physics-I-Irodov/dp/5030008004)

^esconie is this the one? and really, thats all u did? haha wow, youre amazingg!
you never used any easier books to get a general understanding of physics? and after irodov, you never tried any other books?
rohang, you seem really determined to win this. i wish you the best of luck!

i know mit uses one particular book for physics there…but the name has slipped my mind.

but ill get it for you asap
good luck yo.

Lol,yeah!I’d forgotten you’re ‘from’ India too!!
Okay,membership rules-
“One has to be a girl.
One has to be a permanent resident of India.”

Bdw,jbubbles,RohanG-Irodov is the best book I have seen in physics.I have Irodov’s equivalent for math too…I forget the name,I’ll get back to you with it.

^do u offer associate membership for those of who don’t qualify?

it looks like this Irodov book might be a perfect cure for my CC addiction.

whats so amazing about irodov?
