Exeter essay clarification?

I was reading over Phillips Exeter’s essay questions (I’m way behind schedule, I know…) and the first prompt is:

“Tell us about something you learned on your own.”

Initially I thought it was about teaching myself how to do something (learning to program through the internet, teaching yourself how to play the piano, etc).

On second thought, however, I found myself wondering if it asked me to talk about a lesson that I’ve learned (done is better than perfect, words can liberate you, etc).

Perhaps I’m overthinking the prompt or simply lack comprehension skills - hopefully not the latter :frowning: - but which meaning would you go with?

Thanks. I appreciate it.

If theres some unique skill that you learned on your own (something that would truly make you stand out from thousands of other applicants) then stick with that topic. Otherwise i would talk about a personal experience/life lesson that you learned. I clearly remember that such was the case with me.

Good luck!

Thanks. I guess I’ll go with the second since that shows more of my character :/
