Thanks for the info - it is very helpful in thinking about potential conflicts. Do the students pick the dates that work best for them, or are they assigned dates? Is there any benefit to choosing early dates, or does it not matter?

In the past, the first two sessions were Trustee sessions and the last three were Presidential. Candidates were offered a choice of the dates appropriate for the scholarship for which they were interviewing. I don’t recall any candidates having trouble getting a session that worked, though if an applicant is invited and has a conflict with one of the dates it would be a very good idea to immediately reserve a spot in their session of choice.

The only benefit to an early or late date would probably be personal preference - an early date might reduce the stress of anticipating the interview while a late date would reduce the stress of waiting for the result . I do not recall any pattern of candidates from one session or another having better luck than the others.

Please remember it can take a week or more to come if you are across the country. I think my son waited 8 days for his. Fortunately, we were one of the lucky ones who spotted it on line before they discovered what we were doing so we already knew he was up for the Presidential.

Officially: You MUST attend the interview to be awarded a Trustee or Presidential (non-NMSF) scholarship. International candidates are expected to travel to USC for the scholarship interview.

Unofficially: We have had reports from candidates who were out of the country and were able to arrange a skype interview. All had circumstances that kept them from attending - simply being out of the country wasn’t enough - you would have to have something that prevented you from traveling to the interview.

I believe last year letters were received around Jan. 25 and the news posted on CC. But, they were also coming in Feb. Letters were sent at different times, possibly for the different scholarships.

Only about a week left to worry! Hopefully, my son will be invited to visit LA in March. He’s a NMS, if admitted, it would appear that he’s got the half tuition scholarship. Always hoping for more.

National Merit Scholars, if admitted AND enroll, receive half tuition as well as a $1,000 per year scholarship from the NMFoundation. In some cases students MAY also receive smaller scholarships from the individual schools such as Viterbi, Marshall, Dornsife or Annenberg.

My son is a freshman NMF at USC this year. He is receiving the Presidential Scholarship, a $1000/year NMF scholarship, and a University Scholarship of $2500/year. He was invited to interview for the Presidential Scholarship last January despite his NMF status and we were advised to attend the Explore date and interview because sometimes students will be bumped up to the higher scholarship. It didn’t happen for my son, but he was given the extra $2500/year before we committed.

Same NMF award for my D as for NCmom’s S. All three scholarships are renewable for 4 years. Itsme123, you must be thinking of the one-time NM corp. $2500 scholarship. The $1000 per year (for 4 years) NMF scholarship is underwritten by USC for their NMF. This is similar to all the corporate NMF scholarships offered by several US companies and other colleges who underwrite specific NMF scholarships.

Sorry if I missed this:
Can a student be awarded BOTH a Presidential/Trustee AND the NMSF 50% scholarship?
Please remind me what amounts are awarded for Presidential and Trustee.
Thanks!!!

No, you can only get one big scholarship. NMFs are given the half tuition Presidential and $1000 for NMF automatically by declaring USC as you first choice. Some are offered an interview for Presidential or Trustee but if you are awarded one, it replaces the other.
