This board is turning into an advice service. xD

So I’ve been involved in Music Council (hosts Talent Show) and Multicultural Assembly for two years now (members in gr 10, heads this year). I’ve also founded a “new” school newspaper this year with a couple of other people (new name/new layout and content), and I’m def sticking with it. The thing is, my school only allows a person to be in an exec position for ONE major organization. I’m thinking they’re probably going to categorize the paper into a major one, since we do biweekly issues, a fairly large bulk.
BUT, the yearbook editor kind of said that if I apply for head editor next year, I’ll prob get it, cuz no one this year has enough initiative, and none of them really wants to do it anyways (I was a gen. member of yearbook in gr 10, but I’m not in it this year).
I’d for sure pick the newspaper over yearbook, just cuz I have more attachments to it. However, should the school not notice that I’m in both as an exec (and presuming that I make editor, which isn’t for sure), I don’t know if I have enough time for all four of these. If I give up Music Council or Multi (which I don’t really want to…), would unis see this as a lack of commitment? Or is the yearbook thing impressive enough so that they don’t really care (our school’s yearbooks are pretty crazy xD)?

Stick with the newspaper. I think it would have more weight on your app (e.g. if you write an essay about it) than the year book since you’re also kind of a founder.

A biweekly is definitely a heavy load, so I’m sure the unis would understand if you don’t have time to do everything. Commitment is more important than participation. Depth is better than spread.

^ Thank you! Great summarization there: “Commitment is more important than participation. Depth is better than spread.” xD

I just thought it since the yearbook is so pro and whatnot, I should maybe give up Music Council or Multi.

I applied to the highly competitive concurrent education program at Queen’s University. For that I focused more on my depth than my spread, being sure to show that I’m a well rounded student. I got in first round (well, second round really…but I couldn’t have gotten in first round since I’m not a chancellor’s nominee). Depth is definitely more important than the spread you have. Quality over quantity is a life philosophy I like to go by.

well, it’s member for gr 10, then head for music council from second semester of grade 10-now (gr 11)
then it’s member for gr 19, head this year for multi
and founding member of newspaper this year?

does that count as spread? i thought that if i didn’t go for yearbook, it’s pretty “deep”…i stuck with 3 clubs, and i am now in a leadership position in all 3

If I were you, I’d go for the newspaper editor position. I take it that all these EC’s represent your best extracurricular interests, and assuming all things are equal and you can only choose one in which to serve as an officer, newspaper is more of a highly-regarded EC than yearbook (not trying to belittle it or anything), probably due to the more extensive and frequent writing you have to do.

oh i am editor of newspaper right now. in fact, i founded it this year (our old one was crappy, and everyone ignored it, so we started fresh this year)

sorry, it was supposed to be “and founding member of newspaper this year”, no question mark…i don’t know why there’s a question mark = =
