I love looking at makeup palettes, they are so beautiful. (Ones with at least 9 colors). However, when I buy them, I find I only use a couple shades, or don’t really know how to use the others. I have one drugstore one that has 12 colors and I only really use 2. I’ve taken back a couple this year from Ulta after I decided that the colors are too similar to other things I have.
Anyway…am i alone in finding I only have a favorite couple “looks” and default to that all the time?
Following this thread with interest as I just bought D a gorgeous pallete that was recommended by others on CC from Macy’s. I don’t wear makeup so no personal experience one way or another.
I love pallets too and only use a few colors. Ulta has a brand (the name escapes me) where you can customize your pallet and just buy the refills! I had fun putting mine together
I wear eye shadow maybe once or twice a year, if that, so no. I’ve always thought those big palettes were a waste, even when I wore eye shadow regularly. The only make-up I buy in “bulk” is lip gloss sets for my step daughter every Christmas. It’s a tradition, and she loves it.
@HImom , I’m the one that mentioned Urban Decay was half off, and I bought it.
If your daughter doesn’t wear much makeup, she may really like this palette. There are slot of pinks, and they are light…lighter than what like. Soft. They don’t show up on my olive skin as opaque and pop like I need. I think they would be lovelier on more pale skin.
Saying that, before she uses it, she might want to try it first in the store. I’m not sure that Macy’s let’s you return used makeup. Ulta does.
I used to use a palette that had just 5 colors and I used 4 and so it seemed worthwhile. I don’t shop for makeup often. My palette had run out and I found myself near a Sephora, which is where i had purchased it in the past. I went through the store and could not find it and so asked,. It turned out it was discontinued. I wanted to replace it with something similar but they really did not have anything like it that was similar. I was shown a palette that has 12 colors, way more than I would have wanted or needed. But it did have several colors I might use, though that does seem wasteful. Since I don’t shop much, I bought it. I actually have tried about 6 of the 12 colors, and tend to not use the very darkest ones. Here’s what I got:
I love using palettes as I have a hard time opening the little individual pots and get impatient and frustrated.
I have Naked 2, Naked Cherry, an IT one and a Laura Mercier one. I use at least 6 of the 12 colors in each palette. I tend to stay away from the darkest ones, but even the dark ones can go on fairly sheer.
I’ve been watching YouTube videos and experimenting because my eyes are increasingly hooded and I’m trying to give my eyelids some depth with eye shadow.
I have fun with the palettes and although they are pricey, I only buy if there is a good sale- and two were gifts.
I have 3 Urban Decay palettes: Naked, Naked3, and Naked2 Basics. In the larger two, I use about 6 of the colors, and in the smaller Naked2 Basics palette, I have consistently used all but one of the colors. I’ve also purchased singles of a few of them after I depleted the color.
I like the palettes - it gives me the option to change it up, but still stay within the same color scheme. I do use the darker colors as eye liner.
Even with small palettes of 4 colors I don’t use them all. When I went on a trip last year, I went to Ulta and bought a very small blue eye shadow, I think what is used in customized kits. It just has a plastic sleeve/cover, I gritted my teeth to spend the $15(?) to get the compact size. But I’ve used it most days (small amount) for more than a year with plenty still left, so no complaints now.
I like the small kits that show where the colors go- brow, crease, highlight. Need a good name (I do like urban decay) or they don’t go on smoothly or give a lot of color.
I’m happy to give D an Urban Decay palette on sale—will be curious to see if she keeps it and how she uses it. She is in cinema and she and her friends do enjoy experimenting a bit with different looks.
