I just tried to log onto Facebook, and they are requesting my phone number, supposidly for security purposes. Isn’t my password enough? For my own security purposes, I avoid giving out my personal information to any company, including Facebook. I don’t like this! Any advice?

^^^Odd. I just opened mine to see if it happened to me. I was not asked for my phone number.

Consider yourself lucky. They asked me for a copy of my driver licence (!) to prove that I am a real person (!).

“Our systems indicated that your account may not be authentic based on a variety of factors. If you believe you were disabled by mistake, please fill out the correct contact form to help us verify your identity.
Please make sure to upload a government-issued ID with this report and make sure that your full name, date of birth, and photo are clear. You should also black out any personal information that is not needed to verify your identity (e.g., social security number).”

I responded to them via e-mail and refused to provide this, but offered to talk to them or verify my identity in some other way. Result - absolutely none, my profile is frozen.

^^^^^WOW! I have never heard of that happening.

That sounds like you were at an imitation facebook site. How did you get to the site? Did you follow your own shortcut or was it through a link on another page? That doesn’t sound like something FB would do. If you get some intrusive question like that, look at the URL to see if you are really at Facebook. How would facebook know if your DL number is correct? Don’t give out that kind of information.

It sounds like a scam to me, as well. Be careful.

That said, I did have to provide a lot of information, including faxing driver’s license, to ebay once when my account seemed to be linked to another account. It was a little disconcerting, and I read them the riot act on the phone, but I ultimately provided it.

contact Facebook separately and seehat they say

Newstudentmom, Your experience is pretty funny considering I opened a fb account for my dog. Initially it didn’t go through because I used her real birthdate and, you know, you have to be 13 to open a fb account. So I changed the birthdate (dog years?) and bingo! I mean, bowow! She has her very own fb page, and I have one more fb friend.

Sounds like phishing to me. I got something about how I needed to go about re-doing my FB security and how my acct had been breached etc. it was never a problem in the first place (I never do FB anyway…)

This happened to me. The above article describes a past FB system bug which deactivated (women’s) accounts. Maybe this is happening again.

At the time I emailed FB. Their canned response was basically…all decisions are final, you are deactivated. The problem was resolved within 24 hours. I did receive a followup email stating…You are reactivated…

I never did have to send any form of 'government issued ID".

Do not give them this info.

I would suggest that you google some portion of the text you were given. See if others on the internet have encountered this and how they handled it. I strongly suspect that this is a scam and not from FB.

While it could be a scam, I also would not be surprised at all if real FB wanted a copy of your drivers license. They deactivated Salman Rushdie’s account because his real first name isn’t Salman. They also asked for a copy of his passport.

[BBC News - Salman Rushdie claims victory in Facebook name battle](Salman Rushdie claims victory in Facebook name battle - BBC News)

It’s possible in this case that they were attempting to prevent people from pretending to be Rushdie, but it’s still pretty ridiculous.

FB’s been asking for my phone number every time I log on for the last six weeks or so. I haven’t provided it. Funny thing is, it pops up the request when I log on at home, but not when I log on from my computer at work.

Guess what? I tried to log in again - my acct is still disabled. Took me to their Help center. Filled out the form and got the e-mail below from The Facebook Team. I GIVE UP! Facebook just lost a customer.

You were asked to confirm who you are because our security systems thought you may not be using your real identity with this account or that you may have multiple accounts. If youve already tried to log in at [Welcome to Facebook - Log In, Sign Up or Learn More](http://www.facebook.com) and followed the instructions to confirm your identity, but werent able to complete the process, well need to see other proof of your identity.

Heres how to proceed:

Use a scanner or take a digital photo of a government-issued photo ID (such as a drivers license or passport), which shows your full first and last name and date of birth.

Reply directly to this email and attach the image of your ID to the message.

We will confirm that your ID and account information match. As soon as we verify your identity well delete the image of your ID.

Please send an image showing proper identification right away so we can help you get back into your Facebook account. Please note that we will not be able to process your request unless you have submitted the proper identification. Additionally, not submitting proper identification will result in your request being denied.
