If anyone is still thinking about FB privacy, Senator wants Facebook to stop tracking users after they log out

One of the co-founders of What’s App, Jan Koum, is leaving after having trouble with parent company Facebook. It seems that Facebook is following What’s App users around and selling their (far more limited) data too.

The other co-founder of What’s App left and founded Signal, which is everything What’s App used to be in terms of privacy and lack of advertising. Let’s hope that Signal can grab scanty celllular signals as well as What’s App does. I’m switching to it.

PO’ed that FB buys its competitors (except Twitter I guess). I liked Instagram.

Yeah, I liked What’s App. It was a great way to talk, text, share photos, etc., with my sister overseas. But not if the Creepy McCreepers are watching.

There are no such things as free apps. Ad revenue only goes so far… targeted ad revenue goes further, and customer data is the holy grail.

That’s why we need regulations. What I do while logged in, they can sell but not after I am logged out. How is that allowed?

I’d be basically OK with FB targeted ads in a situation where FB uses it, only, and protects it.

Not OK with my FB data loose out in the world though.

And “protect” is of course naive of me to think, after Equifax any sense of data security I had is gone :frowning:

I just wish Facebook would stop suggesting that I update my profile picture. It took me a long time to find a picture that I love and I’m not about to change it.

I love my dumb home.

Never had FB nor do I ever want one. Husband consulted there for a few months and I know too much lol.

Me, too. It’s one convenience I can do without.

Me, three. I actually have a post-it taped over the camera eye on my laptop.

The convo about WhatsApp intrigued me. My H’s friend, who lives in Europe, touted it as a way to communicate with H when she visited the US recently. H installed it, but I refused to. It seemed to work well and I was thinking about using it with the boys when they go on Birthright this summer. Now, I am wondering if it might be a good idea.

You can use Signal the same way. It is run by one of the original What’s App people.

How would I find Signal?

It’s just a phone app. Wherever you load your phone apps from.

Time to go off the grid.

Why can’t theyset it to not collect the data? Why dod they need the data to collect parking fees?

Beware of peeping toms,

Ha! I predicted this either in this thread or another. I forget which. Always best not to name something after someone still living.

Some fund managers are withdrawing from holding FB shares.
