Fluffloooz! Very cool!!! Morgan EAST Is going to RULE!

Is anyone else unable to access floorplans for the freshmen dorms? I got the following message from the housing website: “You don’t have permission to access /williams-only/admin-depts/bg/housing/houses/williams/williams_400.html on this server.” I then logged onto WSO and tried again, but it still wouldn’t let me. I’m dying to know the size of my room, though! Can anybody help?

GG-
It may be that “Williams access only” means campus access only. Some of the web site info is like that, for security reasons. I had taken that to mean Williams students only, but maybe not. Sorry for any disappointment.

gingergirl,

You might want to take a look at thefacebook.com. My D’s JA started a group for her entry there and included the floor plan on the group main page.

Just cut the “williams-only” portion out of the address line and you will have no problem accessing the floor plans.

Thanks so much, haon! That really helps!

Someone on facebook sent me this message on how to see dorm floorplans:

"Hey Ephs, I just wanted to let everyone know that there is a way to access the floorplans for the first-year housing that usually come up as forbidden. Go to the site for housing (<a href=“Williams College”>http://www.williams.edu/admin-depts/bg/housing/index.html) and click on the link for your respective dorm and there should be an option for floor plans on the right side of the screen. If you click on your floor, a window comes up that says FORBIDDEN with a link under it that looks like this: /williams-only/admin-depts/bg/housing/houses/williams/williams_100.html.

Copy and paste this link, removing the williams-only part so that it looks like this:<a href=“Williams College”>Williams College;

Press enter and you know have a rather sketchy floor plan of your dorm. Hope this helps everyone. Props to Darnell Usher for figuring this out (or at least i got this from him.) I can’t wait to see you all in 3 weeks!

Wow. I’m impressed with my room! I can’t wait to meet everyone in a few weeks!

would love to know what banks anyone has found particularly easy to deal with and accessible from campus and which ATM of those banks are ON campus so no fees have to be paid to withdraw cash???
Any parents of upper class students fell free to pipe in and email what you have done for banking…
Thanks so much…

Banknorth on Spring St. is much more user friendly than the other one. Few, if any fees.

Would have to agree with Driver, S used Williamstown Savings Bank and we only noticed over the summer that he was being charged $5 a month for the year. Husband is SURE that he set up a student/no fee checking account last August. They did refund the money but…
I will say that another GREAT thing about Williams is that my S spent very very little money. Everything on campus is free or very low cost.

I think the two banks (Banknorth and Williamstown Savings Bank) are pretty similar in every way. I have a Williamstown Savings Bank account and have never been dissapointed in any way–I don’t think there have been any fees on my debit/checking account I keep with them. Williamstown Savings Bank is not quite on campus, but is only a short walk away. They have an on-campus ATM (hopkins hall for now…probably in the new student center when it gets finished) and a Spring Street ATM. Banknorth is on the end of Spring Street pretty much right across from the WSB ATM. I’ve never heard a student complain about either bank.

It’s possible that things have changed since fall of '03, but at that time there was no comparison–ATM fees, checking account fees, etc., were the rule at W’town Savings Bank. BankNorth was much better. But…do what I did back then and check their websites! :)

True what Proudmama says about costs…plan on some skiing expenses, but other than that, it’s fairly predictable and economical up there.

I’m a current student at Williams, entering my second year this fall (also a former frequenter here on CC but have been out of the loop for more than a year now), so I’ll throw in my two cents. I have my checking account with WSB and have been relatively satisfied with their services-- the ATM is easily accessible in Hopkins (no charge), a very small minimum balance, and online banking options. My only gripe would be the fact that near the end of the school year, I’d overdrawn my account a few times but felt I was fine because I had an overdraft coverage of 250 dollars (still do). And each time I overdrew, I was slapped with a mere 5 dollar fee. However, after redepositing my account into the black, I overdrew again this summer and this time, they charged me 25 dollars, which annoyed me quite a bit. Still not sure why that happened-- they might have a different overdraft policy for kids 18 and under (turned 19 this summer). Otherwise, no problems.

you have made my day …I am excited about not getting calls for more money in the bank account…

This is an extremely useful page from the Williams site, targeted to international students, but equally valid for anyone arriving at Williams for the first time. For Williamstown banks, scroll to “money management” and check out their web pages.
