I took the September ACT and scored a 32.
35 on grammar, 35 on math, 34 on reading, and a 24 on science.
Got a 10 on writing.
I can’t stop reminiscing about how if I had tried harder on the science I would have attained 33+ and be done once and for all. I’m also afraid that although my science improves next test, my luck won’t hold out in the other three sections, dragging my score back to a 32.
Any suggestions?
I would practice the science pieces your best subject. Use a timer. The science sections can be really differnt from test to test. I know my neice took it and got about the same score you did and retook it two weeks later and her score went up about 8 points. Familarize yourself with the differnt types of questions they may ask. Good luck!
A 32 is definitely not failing the ACT. Don’t worry! You have a great score and are eligible for any college. I would try to get that writing regraded because a 10 is really weird. If you insist on scoring higher, do more practice tests and focus on calming down on testing day.
@junior2017 - the ACT essay scores has reverted to a 2-12 scale. A 10 is a 97th percentile score. @taiwanesium - a lot of people here have reported lower science scores compared to the other three. It seems to be a fairly common pattern. Take the test again, if you wish, but the 32C is a very good score, as is your essay score.
This man thinks he ‘failed’ the ACT… but still, Science is just the understanding of data being given to you. Just read the question and find what you need to find.
32 is more than fine. If you insist on retaking, be prepared that other scores could drop, and of you apply to schools that will require you to send all your scores, this could come back to bite you.
There really is nothing to “study” for on the science section, but my best advice is to practice. The first time through, go slowly through practice problems and check the answers as you go. Repetition and slow practice will help you remember how to do it on the actual test.
UPDATE FROM ASKER:
Hi, I know that complaining about a 32 might sound outrageous, but I live in a more competitive region in Southern California. In addition, my ethnicity is Asian, which forces me to score higher in order to escape educational discrimination in the United States.
Thank you for your suggestions.
A 32 would be a great score for a dumb non-competitive region like North Carolina.
And are you looking at UC schools? They are not allowed to discriminate against Asians. Some unnamed super elite schools do have Asian quotas (wait, sorry, I meant they have holistic admissions). I don’t know that a 33 is any different than a 32 though.
If you are limited on time, you focus on practice tests, and only official ones published by ACT. They have some material online, also. If you have more time, there are topics you can review. Many people skip science 9, and ACT loves topics such as weather, earth science, and basic physics that people either never studied or have forgotten. Sure, you can figure most questions out from the data given, but you are faster if you are familiar with the terminology or the topic in general. Don’t try to review science topics in depth - just get a general overview.
