Failed Complex Analysis, Grad School

Quick grad school admissions question for y’all:

I’m a 4.0 Junior up until this current semester. I’ve been extremely melancholy this semester for no apparent reason so grade-wise I am not doing well. I’ll probably fail Complex Analysis, which is a course I am told admissions committees consider extremely important. I doubt I’ll get a single A this semester. Due to my grade in Complex I cannot drop with a W.

If I bounce back from this semester, get an A in Complex next Fall, and continue to do extremely well do I still have a chance at a top university? Have I totally screwed myself because of this semester?

First, get counseling/help. Students don’t drop from a 4.0 to failing most classes in a single semester without something major going on. “Melancholy” may be clinical depression.

Next, I won’t lie to you and say that this semester won’t matter. However, if you can turn everything around and address this semester in your SOP with a simple explanation of “personal issues,” then you may be all right. Just make sure that all the other components of your application remain strong.
