I’m an entering freshman at U.VA, and have yet to attend orientation.

I have 3 classes on my radar:
CHEM 1810/1811 (Principles of Chemical Structure/Lab) --6 credits
MATH 1310 (Calculus I) – 4 credits
SPAN 2010 (Intermediate Spanish) – 3 credits
and, 2-3 other credits.

Both Math and Spanish appear to be full and closed. What other good classes are out there for entering freshmen? I guess I am looking to fulfill other area requirements with this first semester, as much as I want to take math and foreign language.

P.S. I know that you can add classes upon arriving in August; what are the chances that the classes I want will open up? Also, I am looking to major in Chemistry.

Any thoughts or advice from current U.VA students, faculty, or alumni would be appreciated.

You will get a list of cool classes at orientation. Also just look at the General Education requirements such as humanities, social sciences, writing requirement, etc, as well as general Chemistry prerequisities, you might take some of those if you cannot get into your desired classes. Just google for those or reply if you can’t find them.

Spanish is notoriously hard to get into, but math should open up. Also while some classes look closed, they save spots at each orientation so you might be able to get in if you are lucky…

I would watch what else I add to that, have you considered a USEM?? It is only 2 credits and would balance it out.

Absolutely none, nothing that is only 2 credits could fulfill a requirement. But they are cool and you will appreciate having had a little 1 or 2 credit seminar (I’ve taken a lot of them and they were some of my favorite classes).
