Does anyone know anything about linguistics at ucla? It seems like such an unpopular major, but I really got into it after meeting this Hispanic Linguistics professor. Anyway, just curious to see if anyone knows about it. Someone that I follow on Twitter said he was absolutely terrified of the introductory ling course, ling 20, so that made me nervous
do we have to apply for a bruin card right now? if so do we supply the picture and where to we pick it up? or is than an orientation thing?
@reinare I think appeals work like the waitlist in that if you are admitted, you have three days from the notification of your admission to submit your SIR. I think you probably won’t hear until after June 1.
@zettasyntax I’ve heard its very good, but I don’t know that much about the department
@Icj1994 Generally, you submit a photo and then pick up the card at orientation. However, if you have summer classes (of I think even if you just want it early) you can pick it up after June 1 (and after you’ve received email confirmation). It was super easy to do!
It depends on when you appeal and they generally say it’s at least a month, and they also say to SIR somewhere else as it very well might not be forthcoming until after the SIR, and like @fncrane suggested, there must be some sort of space consideration.
Also, if they do approve your appeal, do not ask for a deferral. Not only will they not allow that, it’s kind of like slapping the appeals committee in the face after they took the time to review your application. If you really feel you cannot do it this fall, then withdraw your appeal.
@lindyk8 whoa. relax
not trying to defer because I can’t attend.
It’s weird to be accepted after the time period in which you can commit to their college. if your appeal is accepted and you’re not able to meet the Sir deadline, June 1st, because of appeal decisions, then I was just curious if you could defer that acceptance… Otherwise you really can’t do anything with the acceptance unless they gave more time for SIR
also, I have a sort-of-rare major that only UCLA offers. I’m not going to commit to any other school
@luckie1367 don’t worry. you weren’t prying
@fncrane 3 days would be great. That would be awesome!!
@luckie1367
Oh, I know. Don’t worry about it. Just saying that I have it handled…more or less.
To be fair, the papers aren’t as hard as they sound. I already have a basic working outline in my head of the 12 page paper I’ll do, and a draft for another paper.
The other two papers I have to do will just sort of do themselves, really. Philosophy papers are really formulaic at the undergraduate level and that doesn’t change at UCLA. It’s more about putting the time in to doing them, rather than trying to be original and mindblowing with your essays.
@reinare as noted on the appeals sites, they allow you to SIR passed the deadline if you’re accepted. Otherwise it would be pointless. So I misunderstood your comment about wanting to possibly defer.
@cayton, when you say not as hard as it sounds, what do you think of a capstone 30-40 page paper at Berkeley in humanities? Is it not as frightening as it sounds, based on your UCLA knowledge, which I believe is comparable.
@lindyk8
Sounds like a lot of work, but definitely doable if you seek out sufficient guidance for it from the professor who’s assigned it to you (I think you’re supposed to consult with them regularly when you do these kinds of projects anyway).
Page requirements shouldn’t intimidate people so much as the prompt for the paper should.
Hi guys!
How do you apply for the AAP summer program for transfers?
Hi! I was accepted to UCLA and submitted my SIR about two weeks ago, but a few days ago I got an email from the school which said “Commit to UCLA by June 1!” . It was obviously not sent to me only, but it got me worried that something is wrong since I’ve already committed to UCLA … and it says on MyUCLA that my SIR has gone through. Should I be worried or did something else who accepted get this email?
@Manda001 if your MyUCLA says it was accepted, I wouldn’t worry about it.
Has anyone had any trouble requesting a roommate on the housing app? My friend and I have entered each other’s screen name several times and we still can’t find each other. It says that your potential roommate needs to have an application on file, but both of us have submitted our app already.
@ennanozid do you mean the TSP program? If so,
myUCLA -> New Students -> Summer Programs
Does anyone know if we can submit transcripts in person? I don’t know if I can make it by the deadline by ordering and mailing it in. Mailed one copy in already but it’s been about 2 weeks so I guess the mail was lost…
@donmamba24 are you looking in the right place to see if it has been received?
Yes you can hand-deliver if in a sealed envelope from the CCC.
@luckie1367 yeah I am looking in the right place. They have recoeved my other two transcripts but not these two that I have sent
Does anyone know how you know if they’ve recieved your IGETC certification?
