thanks you guys :). i’ll try to see what i can do and appeal. From what i know, my parents don’t have any assets (or much at all) so im thinking it might be an error? but i’m not too sure. UCLA offered me 16.6K + 2K for health insurance as a gift aid.but the rest (15K) will be offered through loans/workstudy]
edit: so i guess ucla satisfied my needs 100% but then again it’s just a preliminary contract.
You do know everybody is entitled to loans right? If you’re net cost is 15k and your parents made over 80k, that sounds like a correct net cost. What exactly would you be appealing?
@trnsfstdnt, since the UCs usually leave a student with about $9000 in loans/WS, you’re only about $6000 off the general top off. Hopefully, a bit more of the loans will get covered with final.
honestly atm i wouldn’t know much about financial aid since it’s my first time applying for fafsa/financial aid. i just thought it was quite high, but i guess it seems like it’s pretty accurate. i hope my preliminary contract stays similar to the actual one i’ll be receiving then.
Your preliminary FA is usually pretty accurate, so it will likely be The same as your final. It sounds like UCLA is covering your tuition and fees 100%, and that is all that’s covered by blue and gold. So it sounds like, as others have said, you are right in line with what you should be getting. Most students are able to handle working part time while in school so if you have work study you should definitely utilize it. And it is not uncommon for students to need to take out loans. It’s part of your contribution to your own education.
There weren’t many freshman on my floor. One of my roommates was a freshman, but he was cool.
You’re likely to have transfers for roommates since a lot of transfers end up in Rieber Terrace/Vista. You’re also likely to know a lot of transfers on your floor. That was the case for me.
I will be bringing my laptop, unofficial transcript, copy of orientation confirmation, copy of IGETC certification, and some rough schedules that I have put together. I will probably be wearing my running shoes since I think there is a ton of walking involved.
@luckie1367 do we need to bring a laptop? I kinda want to but mine’s kinda bulky and I don’t wanna carry it all day… I was thinking of bringing my ipad
I understand some of it, i.e the requirements for graduation, my major, etc. I get that most of it is blank bc it hasn’t been updated with my official transcript yet, nor has my IGETC been put in.
I need advice on what classes to take my first quarter. I’m a bit worried that I won’t get any classes that I need and that I will be wasting my first quarter. I have nightmares about it lol. I’m a comm major, so I’m trying to understand from their website what classes I need.
All the lower division courses are the ones I’ve already completed as prereqs before coming to UCLA, right? So if I’m missing one prereq, is it a good idea to take the first quarter at UCLA?
Then it says that I need to complete 10 to 11 upper division courses. So this is communication classes right? I’ve heard that impacted majors are very difficult to get classes for. Say, if I don’t get ANY communication class this quarter, what should I take instead?! Is there anything else that I will need to have? Ugh. I’m sorry but I’m just very confused by this whole new system and I’m afraid I’ll mess up and have to stay longer in college because I pickd the wrong classes in the beginning (which would be a nightmare, I can’t really afford that).
You’re not going to pick the wrong classes. During your orientation, you will be in a small group of people with a student advisor who will tell you what to enroll in.
I’m a comm major too! I know it’s an impacted major, but there are also a smaller amount of students in the major, so I think SOME classes will still be open, especially if you have an early orientation/get a good number when signing up for classes. (You apparently split up into groups according to major, then you each pick numbers as to who gets to pick classes first.) I already have 10 possible classes I could take on my course planner, so hopefully I’ll be able to get three of them!
I’m hoping to get one class from one of the four subjects, one elective that counts toward the major and then a random elective, honors course or course for my minor. I’m saving the two main classes until at least winter to give myself a semester to adjust. If you still need a lower division class, I would take that your first semester. unfortunately, we aren’t allowed to meet with our department counselor until classes start.
@onmyway8 Hi! Nice to see another comm major in here. Unfortunately, I have the very last orientation date because I’m not allowed to take the early ones because of my F-1 visa I think I’ll take only 3 classes the first quarter because I need to get used to the system, so hopefully it should be possible to get at least 3 classes that we actually need?! I mean, there is so many to pick from! It’s just that I’ve heard that it is quite impossible to get what you need and since my orientation is the last one, I’m kind of freaking out haha.
Damn I feel like I have the last orientation date. Orientation 208. And now that I saw the orientation for transfers I am now very confused. I kind of wish I went to bruin day. Was there a New Student packet sent out?
