Can someone pm me the link to the transfer facebook page?
so how do u guys know the initial payment is due tmrw? on mine it says 6/30 for around $600 and the next day it’s $1,700.
Students admitted off the wait list or an appeal, and were given an offer last week, have until 6/30. Everyone’s payments are due today.
@FUTUREUCLABRUIN1
When you first get to orientation, you will meet up with your new student advisor. You will be in a group with 10 to 12 other students in your major. The walk you around campus for a little bit and then he will end when you first get to orientation, you will meet up with your new student advisor. You will be in a group with 10 to 12 other students in your major. They walk you around campus for a little bit and then he will end up up in a large session with everyone doing orientation that day. They will talk about campus rules and campus life. Then you will separate back out into your smaller groups.
At some point you will have a chance to go get your Bruin card and have lunch. They will also be a time where everyone from your major will meet with your department advisor. It will probably not be any opportunity for one-on-one counseling, but they will speak to the group as a whole.
Your new student advisor will also have one on one meetings with you about planning out your schedule. They will walk you through your different options and help you choose a schedule. I wouldn’t rely on them too heavily , because they are not necessarily familiar with your major at all. They are really just going off of what is online. So you will do yourself better if you going more prepared.
There will be time late in the afternoon to go to individual breakouts. You can choose which ones you want to go to based on your personal needs. You can go to as many or as few as you want. You also have dinner in one of the resident dining halls. There will be an opportunity after dinner to try to finalize your schedule before registration begins at seven.
At seven you will be able to register for classes. You will meet up again with your new student advisor and they will have you register two people at a time.
@2016Candles Are you familiar with anyone that has changed their major at orientation or if there is a process during orientation to change majors? Thanks.
@2016Candles Thank you for the walk-through, it is really helpful! Can you please tell me if you think that the student orientation was REALLY crucial to attend? I’m trying to decide whether or not to attend it and reading others posts, it make is seem like it is gonna be impossible to get classes without it
On the other hand, I’m thinking, surely there must be classes left to pick from considering it is the first quarter and I have so many options? I also have one prereq left, so it really is only two upper division classes that I need to pick. I would surely attend it if I already lived in the US, but I can only pick the September 8 date and that would mean that I would stay in a hotel or something for 12 days before the move-in on campus so it just seems like it is going to be really expensive for me to attend orientation. This got really long, but ugh I am so confused about what to do!
@Manda001 if you don’t go to orientation, you will register after all orientation dates have passed.
@Thiger Orientation is not the time to try to change majors. I would recommend calling the Department Advisor for the department you want to get into, and ask them the process - assuming it is possible. Every department is different. What major are you currently in, and which one do you want to get into?
@Manda001 As Lucky said, if you don’t go, you register after everyone else, and that will likely leave you with classes you don’t need or want. You can always try to crash classes or get on waitlists (if available), and that can definitely help, but you’ll likely have to wait til school starts to actually get into the classes. If you’re anything like me, I would be way to antsy about my first quarter to wait until the first week of classes to get my finalized schedule.
But I completely understand your dilemma. If you absolutely can’t attend, then you can’t attend. You will get classes, maybe not ones you want, but you won’t be left with nothing. If your major isn’t impacted, then you may not have a huge problem. What’s your major?
@Thiger You actually might be able to change majors prior to orientation, depending on the space available in the desired major and its impaction status. Visit the department website and find the counselor/advisor for the major. Email them and ask about your options.
I was able to switch from African-American studies to gender studies through email. Although, I intend to probably double major in both.
@2016Candles The lower division course for my major (Gender studies) is already full/closed. Should I be concerned?
@LuckyName Yeah … I know, which obviously would be bad but I’m trying to asses how hard it is to get classes at UCLA. I mean, obviously it is hard, but there is soooo many communication classes to chose from - will they all be full? I don’t need more than 3 classes, one of them being a lower division class, so I thought that maybe if I’m not too picky about hours and first choices, it will be ok. I know that at SMC, I could always crash and wait list. Maybe it’s different at UCLA …
@2016Candles I’m a very antsy person actually, haha. My major is communication, so definitely impacted
It’s such an annoying situation! Obviously I want to get the classes, but the only orientation date I actually CAN attend (because of my visa) is the last one so it feels like maybe I will have very bad chance of getting anything anyway
It’s so expensive to attend UCLA, so it just feel like one more big cost that I actually could avoid if I stay at home longer … but then again, I don’t wanna pay a lot of money and then not getting any classes I need. Ugh.
@starkali
I wouldn’t be overly concerned if you’re talking about Gen Studies 10. They have reduced the enrollment capacity to 80, but I would bet that the actual capacity is 160 - - 20 students per section. They close the course at the half way point, to ensure that there are available spots for incoming transfers and freshman. The day of your orientation, you will likely find that there are 5 available spots in that class.
There are 8 Transfer orientations and 8 Freshman orientations, so they will open 5 spots for each of the 16 orientations, making the total enrollment 160 students. I can’t be 100% certain about this, but I’m 96% sure.
@Manda001
The thing about Communications is that while it’s impacted, they really look out for their own. So there are many Comm classes that are not open to any other majors. So you will often find Comm classes that don’t fill up, for that reason. What they typically do is open the Comm classes to non-Comm major only like 1 week before school starts. So you may be OK.
question, so how do i pay for housing if idk how much financial aid im getting? the financial aid is still preliminary.
@trnsfrstdnt when I emailed them about the summer payments (since I"m using loans to pay) they said you have to make the initial payments, and then ‘reimburse yourself later’, which frankly, if I had that type of money I wouldn’t be using loans, but hey, its their rules
@Manda001 my daughter was comm last year and got into all the classes she wanted. She did go to orientation early on, but was told they reserve a certain number for transfers. You can also increase chances of getting in to full classes by emailing prof (better yet go to his/her office hours), go to every class from day one, and follow the class fulfillment online to snap it up if a seat becomes available.
Also comm studies urges you not to take comm 10 first quarter, as it’s a weeder. If that’s the one you’re missing, you might want to consider holding off. There are a lot of elective courses for comm so you should be able to find something. Good luck.
Can someone send me the link to the UCLA Transfer group/page? I cant find it for nothing.

@2016Candles wow this is the first positive thing I’ve heard so far regarding this, thank you so much for your help!!
I really appreciate it and especially when you’ve already gone through it
@lindyk8 thank you for all your suggestions, I’m prepared to all of those things if I can get into a class! The prereq I’m missing is not comm 10, it is anthro 33/comm st m370/ling 1/sociol 24 (I guess you can take any of them, but at SMC it was linguistics 1) so I think I can chose any of those 4? Because I need to take the missing prereq right, even though I got accepted without it? Just making sure I haven’t misunderstood hehe.
