exemption? I don’t know it just prompted me to say if i was a commuter and i said yes and then selected in order of preference my 3 lot choices
Oops, sorry, completely read your 1st post wrong! You’re good!
Anybody know the difference between DN and DEN for housing assignments? When I google them I get similar results for both: De Neve, but whats the difference? It’s weird that they abbreviate them without explaining what the abbreviations actually mean.
What classes did you all sign up for? I ended up being rebellious and doing 3 major specific courses because there was one elective me and my friend liked and our NSA let us, (not like they were in charge but they were really pushing an outside class, problem is most are filled or for graduate students).
Im doing a media ethics course, a computer mediated class and a comm elective
@luckie1367
You should also keep in mind that Blue and Gold will only cover your first two years at UCLA as a transfer student, so that creates the incentive to try and finish on time to save money.
Thanks @Cayton, but unfortunately I don’t qualify for blue and gold
There’s a lot of talk that you can stay as long as you want at UCLA, but I’m not sure that is true based on these two links. If someone is planning to stretch it out they should check. Similar to berkeley they expect you to graduate in two years, with maybe one quarter extension. I may be misreading this, though:

Thanks @lindyk8, those links are very helpful!!
Thats the general feeling of everyone I’ve talked to so far, but I was thinking of going to Murphy Hall to speak with a counselor just in case.
In my rough estimate, I’d exceed the unit cap by about 30-35 quarter units, but I would have a double major to show for it.
I’ll make sure to post whatever I find out Thanks everyone!!
They do give an extra term (?) for doubles, so that may include (a) the one standard extra as well as (b) a double extra. Do you really feel you need an extra year? I’m sure you’ve calculated in summer. What’s the second major?
Cognitive Science…an extra year means I’d be able to take 12-13 units every quarter, and 4 units every summer, instead of 16-18 units a quarter and 8-10 units a summer (assuming I’m allowed over the unit cap)
Have you considered just minoring in Cog Sci? Psych and cog sci are so intertwined. Right - you probably can’t minor in it because they’re considered so alike. Hmmm. That’s an extra year for a very similar major. This is just me speaking as a mom. I would tell my daughter this: really think about the bang for the buck. Double majors don’t bring you as much as you think. I love cog sci, actually, but you could take a lot of extra classes and have psych major, specializing in cog sci. Probably with the same outcome. Just throwing that out there.
I’m more of the belief of bringing in a new element, whether a minor or major, such as psych and statistics - but that’s if a person really really wants a double. But I’m talking career goals. Sometimes ppl just want a subject for their own enrichment (like music, etc), which is another thing.
@Thiger I can help you out!
DN and DEN both technically mean De Neve.
However, in referencing DEN it means plazas. Which offer double and triple plazas that are more spacious and private (and more expensive) with private bathrooms for you and your roommates. Within De Neve plazas, there are multiple buildings but all close and similar to each other.
In referencing DN, it means deluxe halls. These have doubles and triples with communal bathrooms. The two buildings DN offers are “Gardenia” and “Holly”
@lindyk8 thank you! I can minor in CogSci, but I’ve heard that grad schools don’t really look at your minors at all.
Stats is another good suggestion, and I’ll look into it. My thinking behind doing CogSci was to get a programming background which might be needed in some of the psych grad programs I may apply to later.
UCLA does offer a specialization in computing for psychology majors though…
@luckie1367 Math would go great with psych if you were eventually planning on going into computational neuroscience or any researched-based psychology discipline. Statistics would go great with a Psy.D, though.
I’m planning on doing Philosophy + Math double major (or Philosophy + Chemistry) because of how symbiotic philosophy + math are (or philosophy + hard science). Math, as a double major, seems to complement almost any other major pretty well.
@luckie1367 I believe you cannot double major in Psych and CogSci since they are in the same department. You can probably minor in CogSci. http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/catalog/uclacatalog14-15-41e.htm
Anybody on here going to orientation tomorrow a Political Science major?
The transfer orientation website states we should park in lot three, but the confirmation email states we should park in lot 7, does it matter where we park really?
@luckie1367, yeah, well I’m glad to see some others agree. I just see double majoring in cog sci and psych as slightly redundant. It would be like doubling in Econ and biz Econ. Or Econ and political economy.
You’re also talking an extra $30,000. High GPA in psych with a focus in cog sci (or minor) should get you to grad school. I don’t know why it wouldn’t. I don’t know. Just my two cents, which in this economy is one cent.
UPDATE: just looked at @Happy2Help’s link. It does say doubles must be from two depts…
And just to add, I would consider computation for psych (the one you mentioned), stats, or math as @platocrat suggested. Psych has a lot of quantitative statistical…
