Fall 2015 UCLA transfer students

@CCCUCIVYLAW I paid. Not risking having to buy another MacBook in the event that it gets stolen. The cost, spread out among 12 months, seemed pretty minimal in comparison to having to buy another computer.

@CCCUCIVYLAW I got it. But I also raised my property limit, so it didn’t come out to $180

If you live in a dorm and your parents have off-premise coverage then it is unnecessary. If you are living in an apartment you will need it. I’m surprised it’s not mandatory.

Didn’t get it, since I"m not really bringing anything > $200, so I figure $185 + $100 deductible wasn’t worth it.

@2016Candles Oh that makes sense! I ended up taking 2 major classes, better be safe than sorry lol.

Also, is anyone brining a suitcase to the dorm? An odd question maybe but I’ve been thinking about this and it seems like most people drive there and have their car filled with paper and plastic bags. Which I guess makes sense because I have no idea where to put my suitcase considering the sizes of the room?! But I’m coming straight from the airport and I just don’t wanna look stupid with just one suitcase but there is really no other way to bring my things there. Maybe I’m overthinking this haha.

Hey everyone! I just finished TSP a few days ago and just wanted to drop in and tell everyone that you will LOVE UCLA. Good luck! Anyone on-campus now as a move-in assistant?

If we’re not paying for the insurance, do we just not respond to the emails and leave it be?

@Manda001 I only live 30-40 minutes away from ucla and I’m considering bringing a suitcase. I was thinking just unpack real quick then give my parents the suitcase back lol. But since you’re flying, I would probably bring one.

Suitcases are good hiding places for things (pads/tampons, money, embarrassing underwear). You should be able to fit it under your bed. I’m bringing one, but sending it back with my family after I take everything out.

@UCLA17 yes, I’m ignoring the emails.

So I am a Linguistics major, and my NSA thought that it would be beneficial that I take Chinese. I am scared. Can anyone offer any advice?

BTW what is TSP?

To my understanding, the financial aid should be disbursed 10 days before the fall quarter begins, then 2-3 business days to process into our bank accounts, so we should be getting it soon right?

@luckie1367 How long do you think it will be until we see our middle class scholarship reflected in our bruin bill? When is the deadline to pay for tuition online do you know? Thanks :slight_smile:

I’m bringing a small hand-carry suitcase (I like to carry things). It’s always good to have something to carry clothes around, in case you need to live with someone for a period.

You can also use it to carry clothes to the laundromat and not look like someone going to the laundromat.

@Franchman I didn’t take Chinese in CC, but I did in high school. To be honest, it seems very intimidating at first but is doable. The first year was a little rough, and you will need to practice a lot, but it gets easier by the second year. It’s a good language to learn. This is just if you decide to do Chinese.

@Franchman
Transfer Summer Program. You take a few classes in 6 weeks during the summer. It’s meant to be an intensive preparation for academic life at UCLA. Most people I talk to who have done it said it was a rewarding experience.

I wish I would have looked into that. @Cayton

Thank you for the advice. It truly makes me feel better. @apocalypso

Re: insurance, there are other places to get dorm insurance – I use NSSI although it doesn’t cover liability. One incident with the laptop or cell phone would make the insurance worth having. Also please note if you count on homeowners, and make a claim, it could jeopardize your renewal - that’s coming from my friend a State Farm agent. They are recommending insurance due to prior year experiences such as the gals that left candles burning in their dorm last year, causing quite a bit of damage and a hefty bill.

ETA: If you did not do the survey for GradGuard, you will not be signed up or billed for it.

@Franchman
If it makes you feel any better, the classes offered aren’t really that interesting(In my opinion anyway. They seemed a little bland) and they’re not really needed to do well in your first quarter.

I just signed up with NSSI the other day, @Happy2Help. Good to hear I didn’t make a mistake.
