Fall 2015 UCLA transfer students

Just a final heads up, @chr1st1. I checked our local CCC and @bomerr appears absolutely right when he said you could only place up to Calc 1 through a CCC placement test, as Calc 2 doesn’t offer a placement test as an option, at least at our local CCCs. So I guess you should recheck.

I also contacted the UCs re math validation to see if there’s two policies, one for freshmen and one for transfers, or if it’s different for major requirements. There is legitimate confusion to make this an unknown. I will let you know what I hear.

how do I paste a screen shot of my placement scores

@‌bomerr @lindyk8 if I knew how to paste a screenshot of my placement scores I would so I could show you. I’m enrolled into my calculus 2 class. btw I attend coastline. I read the prereq for the Math 185 at Coastline and it says you have to take Math180 (Calculus 1) and pass with a C or better or achieve a qualifying score on Math Placement Test IV.

regardless of who’s right thanks for the advice guys. I guess the only way to know for sure is to call the UC on Monday. Hope they’re open @bomerr @lindyk8 will let you know what the official word is if/when I find out.

did I mention I took business calc at another community college back in the day? Maybe that’s what got me into calc 2?

Ok, back to regularly scheduled programming.
@chr1st1, all I know is the math validation shows that if you are in Calc 2 - however you got there - Calc 1 is validated and you don’t need to take it. It says it in black and white. However, it does seem like most, if not all, of the CCC do not let you place into Calc 2, as bomerr said. I hope the UC gets back to me soon and we can get this straightened out.

UPDATE: just saw bus calc class reference. That might be it.

email coming your way

@bomerr you’re right. the dept chair at coastline said there’s no placement test to get into calc 2. I either got in because of my business calc class or by mistake

FYI biz calc is less rigorous than engineering-grade calc 1 so it wouldn’t qualify as satisfying the requirement.

Your CCC has winter and spring, right? I don’t know. I think you should check and see if you are in Calc 2 because of Bus Calc. If it’s a mistake, I don’t know - now this validation stuff has me spooked. Could you take Calc 1 now and Calc 2 in spring? That would eliminate the whole issue - unless Bus Calc counts as Calc 1.

You could also reach out to UC on Monday and ask specifically about the validation rules for CCC.

@bomerr yeah the business calc was very easy and the whole time the teacher told us it was fake calculus. So I have no idea why i’m placed into the calc 2 class. I’ll call UC on Monday and find out. if i need to take both calc 1 and calc 2 even tho i’m already in calc 2 then i can’t finish by spring which UCLA will hold against me anyways. I pulled a B in my chem class this fall which i think brought my gpa down a bit anyways. UCLA was a longshot to begin with.

have you ever seen placement results that place you into multiple math classes? because that’s what mine looks like

it’s been so long i don’t remember ever paying attention to my scores. @lindyk8 doesn’t my placement look odd? does everyone’s look like that

does UCLA say Calc 2 is required or highly recommended?

sigh. it’s required

Well, even though math validation is up there, I don’t want to steer someone in the wrong direction. You need to call on Monday and see what’s up. If validation is allowed and you’re in Calc 2, then you have to figure out how well you’ll do grade-wise jumping into Calc 2.

When and why did this board start getting so much drama? I can’t even tell who the antagonist is.

Business calc wouldn’t count unless on Assist it shows that is equivalent for Math 31A. At my school, Business Calc did NOT count as Calc 1. Even if it did count, I feel it leaves out way too much of the fundamentals you’ll learn from Calc 1 if you didn’t take AP Calc AB/BC in HS. I don’t know about other UC schools, but my Econ Stats class at UCLA this quarter had some pretty complex integrals and techniques you need to know.

I’m really glad you pointed out the necessity of the knowing courses material in regards to what you’ve actually taken at UCLA. I think sometimes people forget it’s not always just about getting in- you have to be able to do the work once you start. There are a lot of new transfers really struggling just to pass a class, and I think I many cases, they were simply not prepared.

This wasn’t directed at anyone in particular. Just a general observation.

Agree with both @csb111 and @2016candles. Somewhere, not sure if here or in pm, there was a discussion about knowing the subject and grades. OP really wants to get to UCLA and believes she can pull it off as she is doing some other online courses in prep (MIT). I understand the desire to move forward, so totally get it from that POV. But I too think there are some potential flaws in going the Calc 2 route so fast.

The other thing I thought of @chr1st1, you are enrolled in Calc 2. If it is a mistake, come day one of class, they may find the mistake and un-enroll you. Misplacement in classes is not an unusual occurrence. You then may not have the option of getting into Calc 1. My feeling is if it is a mistake and the system let you enroll, it will get corrected.
