Was the open house thing for those who applied to major in art…?
@lexluthor yes, I’ve heard that engineering majors get them as well. From my research it looks like a “Likely letter,” where a select number of transfers get them when they are really amazing candidates, in order to prevent them from going to other schools. The lady on the phone today though (she sounded like a student, have any of you guys gotten incorrect info from students working in their departments?) said that it was sent out in March to everyone who was going to be accepted. Pretty much the opposite from what I’ve seen online in threads, so I’m not sure what to believe. I’m not really sure about other majors open house invites but I’m pretty sure it’s just art and engineering.
@LynAmmo 3.95 business econ. ECs include 2 real estate internships along with volunteer work. Are you able to log in and access it?
Anyone can have access to this if they somehow received a UCLA identification number @williamyang
@williamyang , yup i can access that too, I think that’s new, didn’t see that before. Also under “other student services”, under classes and exams, do you see “About HSSEAS IEI”?
@williamyang No, I don’t have a UCLA account thingy other than the portal. Idk how you get the other one
@LynAmmo you said you contacted ucla through the portal right, when they emailed you a response your id should have been in it.
Okay, has anyone been successful at this?
nope
hey guys check this article out pretty interesting stuff http://dailybruin.com/2017/04/18/the-quad-what-is-it-like-to-transfer-out-of-ucla/
It’s crazy how people can have an amazing application and still feel incredibly nervous. I’d like to think UCLA sits down and reads every single essay but that is too idealistic. I’m just hoping that being a TAP student and a UCLA CCCP scholar gives me an edge
@bmora101 That was really interesting to read, but all I can say about that is the more transfer out… THE MORE CHANCES FOR US YALL! :-h
I hate the part where the school doesn’t know who’s leaving though. So many more spaces could be given to applicants if they had that information smh.
@LbcctoUCLA17 didn’t they say they read every application twice, I’m sure they read every essay lol.
I’ve been told that every application gets a 6-8 minute review by 3 different people, and 3/3 approval is automatic acceptance, and then they go back to 2/3. They speed read every essay for sure, and will likely not pay a whole lot of attention if you bore them in the beginning.
Have also read that the summer class availability thing gets asked every year and has been disproven.
of course I can’t cite any of these.
at the ucla mock trial i was at today, i met a girl who was second-year there, but leaving next year! i thought she was transferring out, but turns out she’s graduating bc she got all her courses done. i also know someone at ucla who wants to transfer out to columbia, so that’s understandable. oh well, more room for us!
@chocstraw Wow, if that’s legit… reading that just made me more nervous…
I’ve always wondered what the application review process actually looks like. I saw a video on youtube from another school’s admissions department where they had a panel sitting around the table in one room… after reading an application they would quickly raise their hands for accept or reject and then move on right away to the next one. Something tells me most schools do this digitally now though, not sitting around a conference table with actual papers like in that video lol.
@rainbubble omg I think I saw the same video…wasn’t it one where they were drawn to those sob stories?
I just typed up a whole thing and it got deleted somehow so I’m giving this an abridged round two.
I know this sounds like typical CC bull shit, but living in LA, I befriended someone in one of my classes, and later found out that he works in administration at UCLA, went to the school himself, and sometimes works around admissions people. He was taking a few CC classes for fun. I don’t ask him a whole lot, because it feels sleazy to ask too much, but he has volunteered some info to me. He told me that each department / major has their own admissions team, and told me that 3 people view the essays. Each department has their own set of admissions agents to account for varying standards and expectations.
I had read from an upper div student’s post, who worked in admissions or at least saw the process, that they read each app for 6-8 minutes, and are quick to dismiss apps that they don’t care for. This particular individual sounded a little cynical, so maybe take it with a grain of salt.
One of the only things I’ve explicitly asked was if I should include the fact that i’m only applying to UCLA. I thought it might be pushy / high pressure / manipulative, and he confirmed with someone that they would indeed feel the same way, so I was correct in thinking that.
From what he has volunteered, having gone to the school, and loving it as well, is that he strongly believes that UCLA loves a survivor story, not a sob story. They don’t want to hear what happened to you as much as they want to hear about how you learned from it, and how you can apply that experience to your time at UCLA. You can certainly play to major life events, outside of what was referred to as the 3 D’s, drugs death and divorce. But less important are the detail of the events, more important is how it’ll help you be a good UCLA student.
I don’t know if I’m oversharing, I don’t know what information is deemed a trade secret. I’m just trying to help anyone out in future correspondence with UCLA, be it appeals or applying next year.
just heard back from uci today for business administration major. I hope ucla comes out this friday and not next wednesday… :((
